The deal with Opterons

Will someone please tell me in a few quick words what an Operton will do that a regular mainstream chip won't do?

And what's the hype all about?
 
opter pwn. The hype really is that a lot of overclockers claim they are more stable/oc better than normal amd 64 chips
 
The Opteron chips are made from higher grade silicon and go through more rigorous testing than mainstream chips since they have to survive reliably in a server environment. Because of their better quality they generally tend to oc higher. I will attest to their being superior to most mainstream chips of the same price/speed. I had a 3000+ Winchester (cost me $150) that was Prime stable at stock volts up to 2.55GHz and a 3700+ San Diego (cost me $330 back when I bought it and sell for ~$220 now) that was Prime stable at stock volts up to 2.65GHz and topped out at 2.85GHz at 1.65V with H2O (SuperPi 32M stable only). Of the three Opterons I've tested so far, two have been Prime stable at stock volts up to 2.80GHz and one up to 2.95GHz, and all three cost me ~$180. All three of my chips can hit 3.0GHz without breaking a sweat, something my other chips could only dream about. To me an 800-1000MHz oc on stock volts is amazing. That's what the hype's all about.

Sounds good to me. What about dual core opterons?
 
The dual core opterons oc very easily. Topslop 1 the single core opterons are the cheapest. I considered one of them but the dual core seemed like the best thing for me to do and I don't regret it one bit. I was running a 3500+ winnie and the 175 is noticably faster in everything especially gaming coupled with the 7800gt co. If I had to do it again I'd buy dc without hessitation.
 
I purchased a opty 146 from mWave on friday. I hope its as good as every one says.

I would have loved to get at opty 170 but its almost double the price of a single core. And with the move to socket M2 on the horizon along with the move to 65nm. I thought it was best for me to wait.

This upgrade was a much needed one for me since I am still using a AMD athlon 2600xp on a nforce 2 board.

Any one looking to buy a Chaintech nforce 2 board bundled with a amd athlon 2600xp. I ll sell it for 50 dollars
 
They are basically the mobile XP-Ms reincarnated as the K8 core. They've got better quality silicon due to their intended market, and thus can usually overclock better. Besides the insane overclocking ability, the biggest advantage is that, at one point, they were no more expensive than their Venice counterparts. The good thing about this is that they had more L2 cache than the Venice.

I've had two Opteron 144s, and a 148. One 144 topped out at 2.7ghz, which admittedly is not much more impressive than a good Venice. Another topped out at 2.9ghz, and my 148 topped out at around 3ghz. I've got a 146 and a 144 coming soon, can't wait to try those out.
 
I readily believe opts are more thoroughly tested, but are they really made out of better silicon or is that an unban myth so often repeated it's become gospel?

Agreed. Who really knows. I have only ever read this on forums. More than likely it is just people readying it and just saying it to another person in a diffrent thread....
 
Opteron/X2's are the only AMD processors that I find worthy of replacing my P4 HT setup... At last, AMD came up with reasonably-priced processors that are better than P4 in multitasking...

Ive tried switching to AMD several times in the past but have always ended up going back to Intel because of HT... But with my current AMD setup, I think I can start getting rid of my P4 stuff....

supposedly Opteron are better chips (in a batch??,maybe not higher grade silicon or different silicon) .. but are marketed to be more reliable because of there intended clients...OEM opteron has 1yr warranty..so AMD even backs them better
