The Darkness - terrible

I know this game got mediocre reviews, but they all seemed to say it's a good game with flaws - and even some people here said it was decent. I managed to snag a deal on the game, so I figured what the hell.

Now, it could just be because I just recently got into console FPS games, and I went from Bioshock to Halo 3 to the Orange Box to Call of Duty 4 - so I suppose the bar was set high. But still, I find the game to be almost unplayable.

The controls are terrible. The graphics are mediocre. The AI is retarded. The story is moderately interesting - though not interesting enough to keep me playing.

I'm maybe 2 hours into it, maybe less - I'm at the part where I am running from the helicopter for the first time. Does this game get better at all? Is this beginning part just a hurdle I need to get through until the "decent" part comes or is it 6+ more hours of the same?

I've played quite a few PC shooters, and even when they're bad, they're still alright. But with a console, it just blows my mind how a poor control scheme can make the game a giant turd. You'd think they would all copy the Halo/CoD4 controls and be done with it.

Oh, and the fact that the main character looks like a retarded goth yet talks like a Sopranos cast member really takes me out of the game.

I liked the game but I think it could have been much better with faster movement. The slow speed of your character is my only big beef with the game.

You know--despite some of the issues I had with the game, I actually enjoyed it and played it through to the end. Pretty good game. I thought it was enjoyable. But, I can imagine it would be a little tough to follow all of those great FPSs. 🙂

That was a good deal 🙂
I wouldn't even call Darkness a FPS - once you got the snake thing you can just basically eat everybody ...

I enjoyed the demo, went out and bought the game and very much enjoyed the game... then I traded it in because the multiplayer was 100% broken.

I thought the game was a lot of fun, and the environment was very creepy and put a good mood to the game - I got it through GameFly and enjoyed it a lot.

I rented the game and thoroughly enjoyed it. I thought it was a refreshing break from all the stale, rehashed FPSs, like the ones you mentioned OP. Even so, I can only recommend this game as a rental. Singleplayer isn't extraordinarily long and multiplayer is HORRIBLE.

I remember trying to play multiplayer and it couldn't find me a single person to play with ...
Yeah ... don't bother with multiplayer on obscure games.

I borrowed the game from a friend and liked most of it. I loved the story and the mood of the game. New York and the subways was a great environment for a game like this. The whole WWI thing should have been a totally different game, but thats from the comic book. Its no Bioshock, Halo 3, Orange Box or Call of Duty 4, but it was good none-the-less.

That's odd, it got 80%+ reviews on average (gamerankings). I was tempted to buy it a few weeks back case it was only $20, guess there's a reason why it was so cheap...

I played the demo and liked it. For $20 I'd have picked it up, where was it on sale at? The cheapest I've seen it so far is $30.

Maybe you guys haven't played enough of it? I thought the game was actually quite good! Definately not the pinnacle of FPS, but the wierd story and different ending was a fresh change from the normal "everybody wins".
The online was gross, yes. But I bought it used and loved it, and if a sequel/prequel comes out I'll buy that used too and love it I'm sure.

strange how a lot of reviewers liked it.

IMO, the audio/visual in the game was really well done, but the gameplay was shit. The special powers were buggy. The AI was shit... & the queues to let you know where to go didn't make any sense... the ww1 world was boring... the "boss fights" were lol.

It's really about getting over the bad & enjoying the good. I put up with this game for about 75% of it & just rid myself. Great ideas & audio/visuals ruined with too much janky bullshit.

I thought this game was excellent. The story was actually good, and the several of the sidequests were enjoyable. I never played the demo, so I can't comment on it. However, if you give the game a chance, it's a fun ride.

I liked the game. Biggest problem is the length (too short) and the crap multiplayer.

Other than that, it's a different, very atmospheric game that's also fresh and interesting.

Yeah, it was pretty aweful - I played it for about 30 minutes before giving up. What pissed me off was the high scores it got on most review sites. The game was buggy, repetative and boring, IMO.

Better comic book than game. Good thing I stopped buying comics. have over 10000 and was going broke buyimg the freaking things! At least I can sell them so I can pay for my kids college! hehe
