Or people read the book because it sounded interesting, or they heard it was good from others. You know, some people do base reading decisions on these.

Is it a good book based on characters, plot, writing style? Absolutely not.

According to you. Nobody has claimed this was pulitzer prize caliber. IT'S A FICTIONAL NOVEL.

Is it a good book based on savvy marketing potential and exploitation of such? It absolutely is.

LOL savvy marketing and exploitation. Boy, you must really hate life then, seeing as how savvy marketing exists from everything from groceries, to toothpaste, movies, and even hemmoroid treatments.
Ok, sure. People read the book because they hear from their other non-reading friends how good it is. I picked up a hardcover myself because it sounded interesting. But I know trash when I read it, and I'm not afraid to express that opinion even if it does go against what the popular sentiment may be.

It's a fictional novel? No sh!t? In that case I totally absolve the author from having to come up with good prose, characters or a plot.

Um, I don't hate life - partly because I understand the meaning of context. This is not a book that stands up as a masterpiece of fiction. It's a book that does well commercially because it deals with a controversial topic and includes a bunch of tidbits that make it great for watercooler discussion.

Here's a *real* book.

Amazon.com reviewer
Hated one of the protagonists, Don Gately, for reasons requiring some self-examination to discover. (1) He's the sort of large ugly ignorant self-satisfied anti-intellectual homophobic cretin I've always disliked in real life. (2) His presentation is hypocritical, one of the most intellectual anti-intellectual statements I've ever read. The more apparent it became Wallace intended to reward him, the more I hated him.

I couldn't even make it through A Confederacy of Dunces because the protagonist was such a prig, and he was *supposed* to be dislikable.

Ed: Oh, yea, and I've said before, Dan Brown is a crappy author. Maybe not as bad as Michael Connelly (at least Brown gets some of his facts right), but pretty crappy.

Infinite Jest is the only book by David Foster Wallace that I have yet to read. It is a very thought-provoking book and may well change your life.

I also read his "Angels and Demons". The quality of writing was not as good as the Da Vinci Code.

It is another murder mystery where the bad guys are all fanatics and Brown uses science and THE CHURCH as gimmicks.

Oh yeah, the plot is thin, characters are one dimensional, the pace is fast and predictable.

I liked it when I read it, because it was full of trivia, and I love random facts. Afterward, when I gave the book serious thought, I realized how thin the plot really was. The Da Vinci Code is a warmed over Angels and Demons, and could have benefitted from some serious editing.

i liked A&D, but after reading Da Vinci, i was like oh boy, how many times can Langdon use the EXACT same idea to solve a crime? but all in all it was extremely easy to read, which for me is a plus. Sometimes i like to just enjoy myself when i am reading, and have the story layed out for me, rather than dealing with a very mundane textbook. but thats just me.

i can see both sides of the fence with it being good and bad.

edit: also, the one thing that got me at the end was Da Vinci wasn't that important. granted, Da Vinci was the basis for stuff, but the french curator was the code designer.. so where exactly was the Da Vinci code was not so prominent for me.

In the category entertainment/crime it's pretty good. But that category will never be viewed as good litterature.

Does having an MA in Psych increase her credibility in reviewing fictional books?
