the "crucial discount" sticky post

Anybody else noticed that you get a 15% discount from crucial because you're buying it on the web? The "special link" that you click to take you to buy memory with the special Anandtech discount takes you to the exact same page as anybody just getting to the site without AT, and you get the same 15% discount.

That post ought to be killed.

<< Every time someone clicks on your link to our site and places an order with Crucial, you'll earn a minimum 7% commission. >>

A good way to support these forums.

very good way to support the forums and it is so easy to find there at the top

Also, I believe the regular web price (without clicking the link) is 10% off. With the link, it is 15%. It's not in addition to the web discount, but it is 5% more than you would have gotten otherwise.

And even if there wasn't an additional discount, get over it. It's an advertisement and it supports the forums.

^^^, what I mean, made a typo, 7 not 1

Okay, fine, they're getting money for it. But the post doesn't mention it. The post makes it look like a completely altruistic thing that they're not benefitting from in any way, like it's just something special they got worked out for AT users. I consider that unethical. Even magazines now have to blatantly point out if something is an advertisement or if their owners are involved.

And you're right, it is only 10% normally (they use a cookie to track where you came from). However again, the post just makes it look like AT isn't getting anything out of the deal.

If they'd explained it in the post, then obviously I wouldn't have had any cause to post this. So anybody that said quit complaining: screw off. I was simply bringing up a point based on the information given, not complaining.

i agree with evermore.. its a tricky referral link, which members are banned for trying to post but the admins can do it all they want.. I paid 30 hard earned bux already to support the forums

Well, there is a Crucial ad at the top of a number of forums including HD so I think most people know AT is in league with Crucial, they're not really hiding that fact. Plus, the wording of the sticky post titles are very ad-like.

But you're right, most people probably don't realize that is a referral link.

its called advertising dank, get over it already.

I honestly can't believe people are complaining about this. Is there nothing more important in the world than complaining that they try to lose a little less money on these forums?

Get over it. Really.

IMO they can even change all the links posted in the "Hot Deals" category and put their affiliate links in there. Of course, it would be nice if they spend the majority of these revenues on server improvements to make the forums even faster.

I really have to point out again, I wasn't complaining about anything in the first place. I was just pointing out what I thought was either an oversight (in that maybe the discount had expired) or an attempt (for whatever reason) to generate traffic under false pretenses.

Stop fricken complaining you punks. None of you have ever even worked for a tech site, you dont know anything about the costs of hosting a forum of this size, and especially with big, expensive servers for cold fusion. I hope Zuni modifies your accounts and makes you all have pop-ups.

For the majority of the idtiots that wander to AT because of the HD forum, trying to explain a referrel would only give them headaches.

So, you think that it is right not to admit a vested interest simply due to financial issues? While I have never worked for a large tech site, I have owned a large anime site, which consumed vast resources, and therefore I am familiar with the problems at hand. The bottom line is that, regardless of financial issues, any vested interest should be reported.

The web isn't free. Someone's paying for it. Here, the subscribers pay with money. The non-subscribers 'pay' by facing ads which let the site keep running. Sure, you could all run your own webservers for a couple bucks a month. Of course, your site probably wouldn't see NEAR the traffic of this site. As traffic and required space go up, so do costs.
So let's all help Anandtech out and go to Crucial and buy memory!!! 😉
(Do I get a commission for that?😀)

I doubt I saw traffic like this site, but my bandwidth costs were over $5,000 a month, so I do know what it's like. I'm more than happy to support AT by accepting advertising banners, but I am not pleased when vested interests are not admitted. It's simply unethical.

Well, I will by buying some DDR for my XP set-up when the new .13 XP's come out. I may as well get Crucial, which I have heard is quite good, and get it at a discount to boot. If AnandTech makes a bit from it, so be it. I still get my discount and my memory. Why is everyone so worked up over this?

duh, hello? It says "ADVERTISEMENT" right in the title. You people blind? And anyone with half a brain would know that a thread like that is a referral either way.

This sums up my opinion quite nicely.

If you care so much about what you are friggin clicking on, then leave. And i guarentee the admins on this forum wont miss you either, you are 1 ant in 70,000 ants, and your point isnt even valid.

Lock this up

Good job. Personal insults and thinking that YOU decide whether people's opinions are valid and when a discussion should stop. You're as free to stop reading it as anyone else is to stop using the forums.
