The crucial AT deal doesn't work for us Canucks.

I mean, I guess it's not really a surprise to any Canadians or anything. I've figured it out and for a 256 meg stick, after the 15% discount and shipping, comes to 133 + change CND. After that you get charged tariffs or taxes by the carrier, so it's not worth it. I can get a 256 meg stick of PC2100 locally for 120 bucks (CND) .. or I can get Crucial from the same guy for 145 CND. Ordering the crucial online isn't really worth it IMO.

What I'm getting at is this;
Canada and the States have enjoyed (depending on what side of the political spectrum you are on) free trade for some years now. I keep hearing about how good free trade is and everything. Corporations can come up here and build Fords or Chevies and us Canadians get some work out of it and so on and so forth. My problem is that shopping online is still not really an option for most of us. I find that anytime I figure out prices that seem good to you American's, just don't work out for us Canadians in the end. Even on Ebay, a lot of the sellers refuse to ship to Canada, Newegg doesn't sell to Canadians etc etc etc ... it's really lame. There is a lot of market up here and dammit I want deals too.

Just had to throw that one out.

Might be wrong, but last time i checked, the Crucial 15% deal doesnt work at all for us UK peeps....but unlike you, orering from Crucial is the fastest, easiest, cheapest way ive found to get it.

You pay FedEx shipping and that adds to the price. However, there is no tariff whatsoever. All you have to pay is the tax, which you would have to pay anyway.

Anyways, I agree that Crucial.com for standard RAM is not always the best option. For laptop RAM it still can be a good deal though.

Indeed, on most computer stuff there is NO DUTY OR TARIFFs. Problems arise when you ship ground shipping and the companies like FedEx Ground or UPS Standard charge you $50 to fill out a bunch of stupid forms (ie. brokerage fees). FedEx Air charges no brokerage fees whatsoever, so the US$13 shipping works out to a pretty good deal if you buy a lot of stuff.

So all I would have to pay is my local sales tax? No tarrif?
I'm about to do it actually, because yeah, 120 after tax here would be about 140 (15% :| GST and PST here in Toronto ON).
But if I have to pay tax ontop of that 135, then yeah, that sucks too.
Anyone know how much extra I'll be paying after shipping? Any canadians? Ontarians? Thanks.

Money is sacred to me nowadays 🙁
I could just opt for the 120 dollar generic PCB micron chip stuff, that wouldn't be bad I guess.

Edit: How do tarrifs work exactly? What are they for? Please and thank you, enlighten me.

I don't remember what it cost for shipping when I bought 2 sticks from Crucial... but when I had to RMA a stick, I had to pay $15 to the FedEx guy when he brought the new stick to my doorstep... I live in Toronto

You ever shop at any of these places?

If you've ever baught anything online from within the states let me know what kind of duties or whatever you had to pay and what those are for anyhow and how you can find out how much they'd be. Please please. I want to sit on my ass all day and get stuff in the mail too. (Jokes, I don't drive anymore 🙁 )

at crucail you will pay their price plus shipping in cdn. (converted by your credit card)

Then you will pay pst and gst and an additional $7.00 to fedex because they collect the gst and pst for you and this is what the charge is for.

That should be all.

So.

Figure crucial cost:

Take dimm cost
add shipping
Multiply by 1.15 (or whatever taxes you have in your province)
Then muliply by 1.6 (exchange rate)
add 7.00 cdn.

This should be your total cost.
