TOWN OF STOCKTON, Wis. —
An investigation is under way after 200 dead cows were found in a field in the Town of Stockton. D:

The Portage County sheriff's office says the owner of the cattle has been working with a local veterinarian and it's believed the animals died from the IBR/BVD virus. The virus can cause respiratory and reproductive problems.

WSAW reports samples from the dead cows have been sent to Madison for testing.

Authorities say there is no threat to humans or other animals.

That's sad, I hope the farm can survive a financial hit like that.

I dont think cows can "drop" dead. "Drop" implies that the cows where at a great height, like maybe they were flying when they died. Everyone knows that cows can not fly - unless their in an airplane, or maybe an explosion blew the cows to a great height, and they died somewhere along the way.

More like "the cows fell over dead". The term "fell over" gives the cow a pivot point that they fell from, like where their hooves were touching the ground.

Anyone plot the cases of sudden, mass animal deaths on a map to see if they form a pentagram or something?

You are an idiot. The expression obviously refers to the center of mass (COM) of the animal. When the animal is standing, the COM is quite a few feet up in the air, as a result of the the height of the animal. When the animal is lying dead on the ground on its side, the COM is much closer to the ground. The final COM has dropped relative to the initial.

As god is my witness, I thought cows could fly.

They can, if they are on an air plane.

Also, if the cows were loaded in a cattle trailer and you go fast enough down the road, someone might say "he is flying down that road" - implying that your driving / moving really fast.

So maybe, just maybe, someone had the cows in a cattle trailer and was driving really fast and the cows died while in transit. So the cows might have been flying down the road, and died. This means the cows fell over dead while flying, but not in a literal sense.
