Reminds me of the 865 Neo board that burned up.. was posted in another thread a while ago.. MSI tried to blame the problem on the person for some ridiculous reason. idiots.

That sucks, I think this has solidified my beliefs about MSI... too scary to risk.

BTW, did it kill anything else becides the mobo?

no, just those cables... though my ethernet card (which still works) has black marks/soot on it

and i don't have any porn on that system, unless the IDE cable female end was being rubbed slowly by the male end.... or something of the sort

Damn that's scary.

I leave at least one of my comps on 24/7...the thought of fire make me nervous.

Good that you were awake!

This is not completely uncommon.

I had an Abit Ka7-100(I think?) board for my old Athlon 900. A capacitor exploded, caught fire, and blackened the motherboard in about a 2in radius.

I think the reason yours stayed on fire was that on your board there is a nice plastic IDE connector and IDE cable ready to get ignited by the capacitor that blew up. My board, luckily, had a fairly blank space around the cap that blew.

Cheap caps on a motherboard will burn up eventually, its only a matter of time. One way to look out for them is if you see the tops of any caps bulging like a can of beans at the grocery store with botulism, then you know its time to back up your stuff and maybe look at replacing the cap or the board.

Anyone else on the same page as me on this one?

well, there are no capacitors that were affected in this motherboard blowout, so maybe it was a wiring fault where the USB cable (which led to the top panel of my V2000A case) was plugged in. the major burn area (see center of the motherboard corner image) is actually the USB jumper, which was surrounded by a "wall" of plastic.

as a side note, my onboard USB never worked, and there were other USB ports throughout the rest of the motherboard with the same problem. i had to purchase a third-party PCI card to get USB connectivity, which sucked. i doubt this had anything to do with it, as i hadn't touched the mobo in perhaps a year or so and the USB had been plugged in that way for the entire time.

i'm still planning on leaving my computer on 24/7, although i'm a bit scared. however, i'm not going to ignore what happened last night because that would just be dumb. i think it would be a best to get a smoke detector near my computer. that's what i plan to do for the future, since i don't want to end up killing myself one day due to another computer electrical fire. i suggest you all do the same if you have the same reservations.

if anyone has any ideas about where to purchase a small-sized smoke detector rather than those larger ones that go on the ceilings, please feel free to share it with me and the others. 🙂

I've seen this before. Where I work we get these once in awhile. Most are busted "caps" that catch fire.

However, one time a guy brought one in where the fire originated at the USB header. He said it was his fault for putting it on backwards (the headers). Dunno if that was the cause, but it was an MSI board.

Glad you found it in time and didn't get hurt. Another reason to have a case w/ a window!!

I was going to say capacitor problem at first but the source, like you said, looks like it is in the lower corner where the USB and IDE connectors are. If the USB never worked I'd say it was just a timing issue, probably short circuited due to dust build up or something crazy like that...

See if you can clean off some of the soot so that it looks like a female, then you can say the virgin mary viisted your PC an sell it on EBAY for $$$.

/Update:

I re-read the thread, you mention USB NEVER worked and the board caught fire AND you'd still recommend that model board to others. Uh, I hope at least with a disclaimer attached... sheesh. :Q

indeed. both of my computers do (this is the one where the fire occurred... there are 7 fans in this baby: v2000a.

yeah, i guess i am strange about recommending boards.... i hate VIA chipsets and this MSI is "loaded" with what i want... maybe i'll change my mind eventually 😱
