I'll receive my first iPhone tomorrow and have a few questions for you guys.

1) I've got a MBP and still have Snow Leopard loaded up. Is there any 4S specific reason to go ahead and upgrade to Lion?

2) I'm moving from an Android device (EVO 4G). What's the best method for backing up/transferring contacts?

3) What are some general suggestions/advice you'd give to an iPhone/iOS first timer? Any settings I should immediately look into? Apps?

To be honest I'm just a little excited about trying something new and like most of us I kind of want to talk it up a big prior to getting started. :)

1: contacts, calendars, email (@me.com), photo stream, documents in the cloud (only works with iwork right now), find my mac, that sort of thing. however, minus the find my mac and photo stream stuff, you can always manually upload directly to icloud.com. im still running snow leopard (i refuse to upgrade to lion) on my mbp and i havent run into a single problem with my 4S and icloud.

2: since your contacts are synced to your gmail account, its pretty easy to move them over to your iphone and/or mbp. you can either go through ical and turn on google/gmail sync so your contacts will show up in ical and you can then sync them over onto your iphone through itunes. you can also go on your iphone and set up gmail as an exchange account so it'll sync your contacts directly to your phone.

3: http://lifehacker.com/5827212/lifehacker-pack-for-iphone-our-list-of-the-best-iphone-apps - lifehacker has a pretty good list of what to get. settings wise, just play around in it - everything is easy to get to. read guides on "going from android/evo 4G to an iphone" so it'll make the transition a lot easier.

Just log into google via gmail on your phone and select sync contacts to pull everything in. Then sign into icloud and they will transfer there. Remove gmail and you will be icloud only if you choose, or keep them both.

Liking it so far but I'm definitely not getting the battery life I would expect from an Apple device. I went to bed at 11PM last night with the phone fully charged at 100% and woke up at 5:30AM to find it sitting at 72%. Weird thing is that its 11:30 right now and I've actually been using the phone but the battery is only down to 55%. The usage statistics are strange too.

I'm chalking this up to something that looks like the battery needs to be conditioned or something. I'll worry if it's doing the same thing a week from now.

Everything else has been a breeze thus far. Will report back with some details early next week.

takes a while for the battery to calibrate, but i've noticed that it does a lot more in the background than iOS4. once in a while foursquare will pop up to recommend a local place. means a lot of apps can now be enabled to do more in the background and use up more juice

catch 22. people ask for these features and then complain when it eats battery

I agree on the catch 22 but just wish there was an easier way to specifically pinpoint what is eating away at the battery. That way more intelligence can go into deciding what apps to use and what to allow those apps to do (if the option is given).

Yeah, this is why most android phones battery life sucks. Welcome to our hell! :)

My battery use seemed odd at first, but it's pretty much where I would expect it now. Do you have WiFi Sync or iCloud backup turned on?

Although... why not leave your phone plugged in at night? That's actually my main charging time for my phone. :)

I usually do leave it plugged in at night. Last night I had it plugged in to the laptop and forgot that shutting it killed the USB power. Still doesn't excuse such a huge loss in battery percentage but like I said that could be calibration. I'll bet it sits at 1% forever.
