The console commercials are awful. Who comes up with these things?

I'm an Xbox One user, but I have to admit that I really like the PS4 commercials, especially the one below. It's definitely cheesy, but it's a good way of showing off content to average people in a lighter way whereas they might be turned off by the darker tone of the actual gameplay.

That commercial was TERRIBLE. Well, all of the PS4 ones have been, but I specifically meant the "Perfect Day" one. I hated it because they didn't have ANY game footage, and I don't eve know what 2 of the 3 games in the commercial are (one's Killzone I assume the car one is Driveclub, but IDK what the first in the commercial is).

While the Xbox One's commercials aren't exactly phenomenal, they usually include game footage, and sometimes of multiple games. They'll often end with something about the actual game as well, such as telling you that there is a Titanfall console bundle.

Video Game commercials don't have to show you the games. They just have to look cool for people who aren't already following the industry and don't know about the system or its games. If they look cool, get someone's attention, then show the name of the company or game and maybe a website to look at...they did their job.

And the commercials have done none of that, IMO. To go back to that "Perfect Day" commercial, you have off-key singing, a flipping car, and explosions. You don't get anything else. At least Microsoft showed you doing crazy things in several settings, both in faux-real life and in-game.

I'm not a commercial person, though. Commercials don't influence me. I might laugh at them or think they're decent at times, but I can't think of a time where I saw a commercial and had it change my opinion on something or get me interested.

I'm using that sharing is caring commercial as a legal defense if I ever get sued by Sony.

Heh... Apparently, those commercials have been quite effective.

Study some marketing, if you don't get the irony.

Again...

The commercials do NOT have to show the games. They are only there to get someone's attention who is not already following gaming. If they made you comment on them and you remembered it...then it is painfully obvious that the commercials are in fact working.

That's what everyone says. If advertising didn't work then it wouldn't exist

I've had it make me get beer once or twice

You think the commercials are bad today, check out the ones from the late 90s. I guess the prevailing wisdom at the time was to make ads that were bizarre for the sake of being bizarre. Often with little or nothing to do with the game or console.

Here's a few from the PS2 days. Europe I'm guessing based on the nudity. (These are NSFW BTW). If it didn't say PS2 in the corner, I dare you to tell me what they were trying to sell.

So, where can I sign up for 'futurefield's marketing 101'? Would it be how to make a commercial for products not breaking console sales records?

For not being a commercial person, they got you to make at least two posts to discuss them. Seems the goal of getting people to talk about the product has succeeded.

It depends on the angle from which you look at it. The commercials are to get you interested. This makes me cringe and want nothing to do with it. Is it REALLY working? When people ask me about my opinion on a product, if all I've seen is based on commercials, then it'd probably be useful to have those commercials be semi-informative.

Heh...that's not what a commercial is for. It's only for name recognition. You might not believe it but most people buy a product because they have heard of it before vs a brand they never heard of. Even if they are not informed at all.

Hence why I previously said that I am not the target consumer for commercials.
I have no doubt that is true for products that you are passionate about, i.e. technology...

But nobody is 100% immune to brand recognition. Perhaps you are on vacation, and you go into a store to buy tissues. All they have is Kleenex and some other brand you don't recognize, but essentially all things being equal (except the name.) You are undoubtedly more likely to buy the brand you recognize.

And if tissue don't do that for you, I'm certain there are other products that will.

I can't really think of one that does. Of course, quality is a real thing, so I will pick some better-know products over others, but in most cases, I just take the cheapest option. For example, I love generic brand soda, and the fact that it's almost always the cheapest option is a plus. I don't care to get Prairie Farms milk or Hershey's chocolate syrup or Sargento cheese, unless they're on sales good enough to warrant slightly-higher prices.

Like you said, it's probably happened. However, I just can't think of any instances. I don't need the world's softest, lotioniest tissues, so I wouldn't care about that. I guess the one instance where I take the known brand is with gaming peripherals. For example, I don't care to go Nyko for 360 batteries, though that's more about having all of the stuff the same than having a real brand PREFERENCE.

Honestly, most of them are MUCH better than the older commercials from the mid-90s.

At least print ads. Not sure how many people remember them, but I have dozens of old gaming mags from the '90s, and as much as I hold that era sacred and dear for the actual stellar games, the ads from that time were wretched.

I actually thought about uploading a few from some mags as examples, but they were usually utterly tasteless, "in your face", or the worst of all, the ones that "challenged" you by basically insulting you("If you're still reading this ad, you're probably too stupid to play the game" type ads ). They usually went for shock (vomit references/pictures, eyes bleeding, general gross crap) and were obviously targeted at a 12-18 male demographic.

Most of us were in that demographic at the time so we probably didn't notice, but it's very noticeable looking back now. And since gaming has matured and average game player ages have as well, it's good to see that at least most advertising has shifted to be a little more mature and targeted at an older demographic.

Here's a few more extreme(!) 90s game ads
http://www.1up.com/features/gallery-ads-of-the-90s

Advertising in the 90s was very in your face, with a lot of 'tude mahn. I think a lot of the grotesque stuff came from grunge roots. That and they had to be more eXtreme to appeal to the zoned out Gen X teenagers of the era. Even Nintendo jumped on the bandwagon with their "Play it Loud" campaign. I like how they tried to even extreme up Yoshi's Island.
