Well we all know what's coming next....-> Robots.

I have a simple question for anyone who cares to give an intelligent answer; How can I make millions of dollars in the coming robotic revolution?

Is the answer in software? Will robots have applications you can purchase for them? Will they have an Operating System? Or will all of this stuff be hardcoded into each machine?

Or does the money lie elsewhere?

What do you think?

The 18th and 19th centuries had the Industrial Revolution, but the 21st and 22nd centuries shall have the "Robotic Revolution."

I think it will be in software initially, then hardware: Artificial Intelligence.

People will want machines to be smart and adaptable; I know I want something reasonably intelligent. For example, the AI's I encounter in computer games have quirks, and aren't very adaptable - they have certain patterns which can be exploited. For example, Homeworld2: the computer will send a HUGE fleet to attack my mothership, which would easily defeat me. Solution: send a single scout squadron (3 tiny ships) to attack their undefended command ship. Result: Their entire fleet turns around and runs back to the command ship to counter the scouts' perfectly attack. A scout squadron is benign even against other fighters. It is no threat to a capital ship, but apparently the AI doesn't know this.
The AI also does not adapt - the same technique will work over and over again.

A robot will require some form of accumulated memory, and it will need to know how to determine what information is useful. Our minds do the same thing - certain information is retained, but the majority is discarded. A robot would need a similar lossy compression engine, otherwise it could fill up its entire databank with unimportant data. For example, if it is to go outside, it doesn't need to care about how many birds are in a nearby tree, it may instead need to determine if it is raining or not.

Making something intelligent may take a lot of programming, or else it may take a small amount of very carefully assembled programming that will allow the robot to determine on its own how to learn.

Make money? You intend to create artificial intelligence?

There will be different systems for different tasks, not one universal machine. Some control systems are evolved through genetic algorithms, others are programmed but using ever improving frameworks for memory formation and the like.

If you mean you want to invest in a particular company, Numenta has gotten a lot of hype recently, but there are a number of similar projects. Robotics is growing and will continue to do so on all fronts, you are likely to make a decent return with a bit of sense and enough diversification.
