The Colors and Whites. Do they need to be separated?

Yes, whites and other races just can't get along. We should keep races separated in their own countries. I'd also support separating by political affiliation.

Laundry is the easiest thing in the world. Yes, you should separate some colors to prevent whites from becoming not white.

I do:
Non-whites in one load, cold water, air dry.
Whites in another load, cold water, air dry.
Underwear, sleeping clothes, and other dirtier stuff in hot water, then dryer.

For the first couple of times for a new colored item; wash in colors - dyes may leak.

Washing whites vs colors will be of benefit if you are adding bleach to help whiten the whites.

I mix everything, but you have to be careful. Some colors will bleed, especially when new, and if you don't know the types that bleed, it's better to keep them separate.

I use nothing but laundry detergent. No bleach, no softeners, no dryer sheets, nothing.

This. Only non-scented detergent.

I don't separate by color, I separate by use. Socks, underwear and towels get washed on the hottest setting.

Everything else on warm.

Everything gets washed in the same load for me. Cold water.

I don't wear white shirts, and I don't give a shit if my socks and undershirts aren't as white as the day they were new.

Do I need that?

No, this:

...or a cup of 3% hydrogen peroxide.

Chlorine bleach can do more harm than good if what you're washing isn't 100% cotton; any fabric or thread that adds elasticity to the material will be attacked and will eventually discolor with respect to the cotton. That's usually the reason for the "use only non-chrorine bleach" warning on the care label.

I always wash my whites in my premium washer. The coloreds can use the one I dragged up from the dump. Don't want them mingling. Gotta keep your clothes separate, but equal.

I wash my whites, greys, and light beige stuff together. That's fine. Darks separate. Cold water. Only use hot for sheets and towels. Any bold colours get washed separate too. I don't have many so they just sit in the basket until I've got enough. Been doing my own laundry since my early teens. I rank it pretty high on a list of critical skills every man should master.

I generally find that you can throw everything in together in the washer if you set it on cold. YMMV
