Hey Gang,

I've had a number of XP-M's and they have all had a green substrate. Got one from NewEgg today and it had a BROWN substrate, sort of like some of the older chips. It's a week 15 (0515) though, so I know it's new.

Anyone else seen/gotten any of these and if so, do they differ in anything but color?

Yeah, I had a brown one or two...I don't remember any noticeable differences, though.

That's the newest date I've heard of for a mobile. What is your stepping? and model?

My four all were greenies:

It's sitting in my desk at work. I'll post the info when I get there.

Thanks, Joe, and good luck with it. Color of the package shouldn't make any difference. It all comes down to the stepping of the core (and finally, dumb luck). The only brownie I've ever got was an old desktop XP2400+.

So these new CPUs don't say "Assembled In Malaysia" on the "green or brown" anymore - it's now on the tag with the stepping?

I didn't actually say that, but you nailed it! It's on the tag instead of being silk screened on the substrate itself.

Actually, as I sit here comparing it to an oldie but goody 1700+ overclocking monster that is also brown... the new chip is a much GREENER brown, lighter in color and you can see all the traces right through the top of the layer of the substrate, unlike the older brown chip but sililar to the green chips... although you can see the traces even better than on the green chips.
