You have to admit having two parents in the home (or at least involved in the child's life) is better than just having one parent. So the fact that we have more single mothers now than we did a few decades ago is "destructive".

Sure, its just as beneficial as the drug and sex culture has been on the White community.

Society is plagued with many issues right now, drug use, teenage pregnancy, kids having sex...etc.

I am only 22 years old and I remember starting 6th grade and being completely ignorant about sex or being pregnant at 13, I didn't think it was physically possible to be pregnant in Middle school. By 8th grade, there was a 6th grade girl in my Music class that was visibly pregnant and I couldn't wrap my head around it....by High School, there were multiple pregnant girls at my school.

My little sister went to school with mostly whites and she had pregnant girls at her school too!

My mom would have given me the ass whipping of a lifetime if she found out I was having sex at 12,14...16. Some of these kids don't have parents that are active in their lives like that anymore.

My mom didn't allow me to go to sleepovers (unless it was a family member), I was finally able to go out and spend the night somewhere when I turned 17. I knew kids whose parents let them go to hotel parties without supervision in 9th grade.

What I am trying to convey here is that Society as a whole has problems. Yes, we have our issues in the Black Community and I can promise you that many of us are above some of these issues and we have to fight the stereotype that ALL of us are struggling because that's what you see on TV. My mother raised TWO kids by herself, I know who my father is...where he lives, I know his name, I know his phone number. I have known this information my whole life, he was never a father to us. The most he would do was buy us a pack of pencils and notebooks at the beginning of every school year while my mother clothed, fed, and kept a roof over our head. She worked two jobs once, I remember because she was never home. I was 8 years old and I was at home alone with my 5 year old sister cooking dinner, washing clothes, and doing homework while I waited for her to get home.

He has 4 other kids, there might be more. He only claims my sister and I and a 5 year old child he fathered whose mother wouldn't let him just run away. He tells people that he has been proactive in our lives since we were born. People thinks hes some kind of "super dad". People also ask me why I call him by his name instead of calling him "Dad". The truth would be too much for some of these people to handle..so I don't comment on anything.

As far as your question on the rates of single parenthood or being unwed in the black community...I think its part of a vicious cycle.

Take a young black male whose father was absent in his life...he has never seen his fathers face and was only raised by his mother. You would think that naturally, he'd have the desire to stay in his kids' life (lives) should he ever reproduce one day..but then you have to factor into the equation other black males that he meets (and becomes friends with) who grew up the same way. You've seen it o TV, in the news and in the movies. Black males go together like Greens and Cornbread. People who are friends for a long time start to take on each other's traits and attitudes sometimes. Without guidance from a responsible male, a child can only emulate what he sees from other males around him. That could either be a negative or positive thing.

No father and a mother who couldn't play the role of the father to her best ability. His friends don't respect women, they can have unprotected sex and walk away from a responsibility. Why would he see the value in staying in his child's life if he came out okay without his father? Why would he stay if his friends have taught him that you can change women like coffee filters?

So then you have another child out in society that will take on the same attitudes as his unknown father and he will reproduce and if he has a son...etc.

I really cant provide you the answers you want to hear on this question though, I have quite a few black male friends that grew up without fathers and they don't have poor attitudes about life and children. My own father is 1 of 7 kids and his father was in the home his entire life. So...I really don't know.

Maybe there is something in the water.

I didn't say that. But it probably helps. My mom chained me in some respects, it was hard for me to sneak out to be with boys or go to parties, etc. Now, I WASN'T completely chained down. I am just saying, she was a child once that snuck out (to go to a Prince Concert.. lol) to hang when she was coming up..so she knows the game.

I have friends with parents who didn't know what their kids were doing, didn't ask questions, etc.. One of my friends didn't come right home after school one day, she went to her boyfriends house to have sex for the first time. She told me the next day at school that she came back home after (late!) and her mom didn't ask her anything.

A LOT of kids can learn right from wrong on their own without parents intervening. Different strokes for different folks or something....or maybe that isnt the right saying to use.

As with almost all societal issues, I don't think anything can be done. There can be a few theories on what to do to help, but I honestly don't believe real world changes will curb the results.

I almost equate it to large companies that have HR depts or administration that come up with new strategies to change the culture of the company, which all fail.

Who told me not to work too much when I was sick? My parents. Who made us actually sit down for dinner? My parents. Who made sure we had a balanced work and social life? My parents.

Things are already turning into working through sickness and spread your germs around like we are in a 3rd world country. Take your work home with you and stress out about it. Eat in front of the TV, standing, studying, in your car, etc. Everyone does it and having a conversation when you eat is ancient history.

The boomers had the wisdom of their parents who went through the great depression instilled in them. Don't kill yourself over work, give people enough breathing room to be human so they perform better. Contrast this to the lessons learned in the great depression where people got fired for getting caught taking a leak. Looks like we are headed that direction again.

I think the direction, too is unavoidable. I just take it with a grain of salt instead, I recognize that it exists and just move on. I would jump at the chance to change the system in the proper direction but don't have the power to do so. Very Zen-like towards the current calamity. Peoples expectations are way off from reality, both generations, both the rich and the poor.

People are going to be a bit upset when retirement doesn't work out, be upset at high energy prices because we have done nothing to really change our infrastructure, have way too high of living standard expectations doing a minimal amount of work, have way too high of salary expectations while in college, have way too many expectations of the government to take care of their every little need, etc. People on entitlements are going to be upset at the increasing strings that come attached to the money, rich people are going to be upset at the louder and louder chorus of people trying to take what they earned, etc.

I agree with this too. They "got theirs" and are now lazy. They know they are likely to get social security, so screw everyone else. They know the first ones to retire will get good pensions, not their problem anymore. The bubbles were in their prime years and they just could not care less at how different it is for people now.

Human beings are not computers that can just delete or erase a corrupt program and install a good one.

Once you break a child when they are young and allow them to grow broken it becomes very difficult to fix even for the ones that want to be fixed,

because the psychological ball and chains as well as looking back and dwelling on the bitterness in ones past is the most difficult thing for one to overcome and can consume them to the point of irrationality.

Some will overcome it many will not.
