The CATS Pitch meeting

I haven't seen the Broadway show or the movies but that makes the movie sound even dumber than it looked - which is impressive because it looked real dumb

The musical is quite ridiculous/terrible, too. Early point in that video is spot on: "Shouldn't this only exist in the medium it was designed for?" yes, yes it should. It..."works" as a musical, but then a lot of good musicals are also very stupid and senseless. This is the dumbest/most senseless of them all, especially considering how preposterously successful it has been.

I don't know, an ABBA musical is unbelievably stupid and senseless and that did over half a billion at the box office. Cats was the most successful Broadway show ever that had not either been turned into a movie or based on a movie to begin with. Of course someone was going to do it eventually and maybe it could have been successful if it had been done differently. This looks awful because it was botched, not because the material is inherently unwatchable.

I don't know, man. I was once forced to sit through Jesus Christ Superstar.

The music in the ABBA musical wasnt written by Andrew Lloyd Webber. /musicsnob

ABBA is disco-pop-repetitive-garbage dressed up in sequins, spangles and spandex that only appeals to 12 year old girls and Euro-nancyboys. /pleaseyourmusicsnobberyisweaksauce
There is way more variation in ABBAs music than Webbers low fat high sugar opera lite for Philistines that are scared of musical theatre in a foreign language.

doesn't change the fact that Cats isn't movie material. It's simply nonsense and preposterous. There is no real story there.

The ABBA stuff used music to frame an actual story, with actual characters.

Webber attempts to use his music to convey story and emotion while ABBA's synth-pop is considered too sugary to use as kids cereal and so free from intelligence that even politicians refuse to use it in their campaigns.

JCS is pretty good, though, as far as Webber stuff goes. The dude from Deep Purple was the original recording voice on the UK album release, and was pretty badass for its time. And it's not just tunes--it's a pretty timeless story that's cleverly and effectively told from the perspective of Judas...and Judas gets all of the best bits.

Bullshit. Why exactly is Cats theater material and not movie material? Please explain the nuances of the mediums which show why people will sit in a theater and watch it for 90 minutes on stage, but not sit in a theater and watch it for 90 minutes on screen. I'm dying to hear this.

Cats is an unbelievably stupid idea, but nonetheless an unbelievably successful one. If Pixar had done it the movie would probably have opened at $50 million.

Cats has no characters. It's just a bunch of objects with names that come out and sing a song. That's it. Have you ever seen it?

It works in the ridiculous world of musical theater because it's all production, nothing else. It simply isn't a movie. There are no characters! Why do I have to keep saying this--or is it that you don't know how movies work?

This works in the theater because it's a stage show--like an extended Vegas variety show with all sorts of eyegasm material, and catchy, hummable tunes. You are ignoring that every successful filmed musical has characters and a plot....hell, I can't think of any stage productions that don't have that either, outside of Cats.

Why is it successful? I don't know--why is Michael Bay successful in the film medium? Same vapid bullshit. replace explosions with hummable tunes. There is a lot of audience participation, and it's the kind of thing you take people to to see/experience--not so much to appreciate. Everything that makes it work on stage can't exist in a movie format.

...I do think Pixar could make it work, but there would be some content added to it, and much deleted (like all of the pointless cats that sing one song for some reason). Anyway, I'm not sure that you know what Cats is, if you don't understand this.

I think my parents saw the Cats play back in the early 90s or late 80s, and I remember my mom telling me they had real cats in the audience.

What's crazy is that the musical grossed over $3 billion dollars worldwide.

Billion with a "b". Think about that.

Sat through Cats musical in NYC, was not impressed. Now some lunatic thought it would make bank as a movie. They deserve to lose their shirts.
