The cable is run

As you may know or may not or care or may not or bite my ass or may not...last night I posted a thread, this one about my failed attempt to get wireless networking up and running.

I had said I was going to run a cable, and I just finished. It's not the proper way, I.E. wallplates on either side etc, b/c this is an apt and I'm not investing that kind of time.

I punched a hole (with a 12" long screwdriver) thru both walls in the corner of the room (luckily, I have a stud finder so it was easy to ensure I didn't try to poke the unpokeable) and snaked the cable thru. It's about a 50 foot run.

Embarassingly, terminating the cable was the bitch part. 😱 I have a cable tester and for some reason, I just couldn't get one end right. 5 tried later and I've got a working cable. 🙂 I used those hammer-on, coaxial staples to run the cable along the baseboards in both rooms and voila!!!! Totally secure LAN connection from the switch to the HTPC. 🙂

Feel free to say "Hooray for you."

What's the complex manager have to say regarding you shanking the walls? 😛

/whistling....feigning ignorance

Well, he doesn't know. 😀 I look at it this way; I've already got about...3 dozen small holes in the walls b/c of the hollow wall anchors that I've installed to hold up the various shelves, brackets and whatnot.

I know I'm going to have to at least fill in those holes b/f I move; what's one more?

If anything THIS latest hole is the least noticeable as it's in the lower corner (about 3" from the floor and the wall) of both rooms as opposed to all the other holes that are at eye level or higher.

Fck it. I live here. I've gotta live. I need shelves. I need wires. I need this stuff. That's what I pay rent for. AFA the landlord having to paint the apt; that's called "The Cost of Doing Business."

I am not "trashing' the apt. Quite to the contrary; the place is hosptial-clean-antiseptic. There are just a few holes in the walls.

Tacking CAT 5 to the floor baseboards seems pretty gheto to me.

First off, it's Cat5e😀 Secondly, how else would you suggest I get it done? Leave it strung diagonally across the living room, hallway and second bedroom? At least this way it's not a tripping hazard, doesn't obstruct walking paths, etc.

And most important, since it cannot be tripped on/caught on/cut off, my data flow is safe. 😀

I would get the wireless working.

cheers michaelD at least you managed to figure something out, most people would have given up and called 'technical support', cried, phoned a technologically superior friend, etc.

Why not, all one needs to do is wire the j45 jack next to the toliet paper dispenser.

Genius!!!

Cable runs = more reliable

In my experience, no matter how badass your wireless is with however many badass antennas and extenders and boosters, it will never be as reliable and fast as a wired connection.
