Does anybody recall that deal it was a 22 inch CRT monitor for like 150 bucks? did it start the Internet hot deal forms I know it's why Anandtech's came around.

anyone have more info?

In 98 some posted a deal at buy.com a 22inch crt for like 150, people freaked buy.com reneged, there were 100's of posts in the general forum, so they created the hot deals forum, and i believe it spawned the rest of them

Back around 2000, Buy.com offered a Viewsonic monitor on their website for some really low price. I don't know if it was a price mistake or they just had limited stock, but a whole bunch of people didn't get their low-price monitor.

They banded together and filed a class action lawsuit I believe. They won the lawsuit and the class members got some sort of settlement. They became known as the "wounded monitor children".

I don't think it was the birth of the Hot Deals forum here though. I thought there was already a HD forum when it happened.

The HD forum did probably contribute to the demise of some Dotcom websites though. I guess it wasn't the fault of the HD forum - but these sits probably didn't expect a massive amount of orders using their $10 of $10 purchase coupons.

I don't think it was a Viewsonic, if I remember my order correctly, it was for a Hitachi monitor. And I never got anything from the class action suit.

From what I remember it was a Viewsonic, but my recollections from that time are fuzzy.

Webarchive of the HD forum back in 2001

Geez, the forums were really active back then. The front page of the Hot Deals forum only covered posts in the last 8 minutes. Currently, there's posts older than 8 hours on the front page. I guess FW and SD have taken over since then.

Hitachi. My friend got one (and still uses it).

I liked the Intel 10/100 8 port switch that was something like $51 when it should have been 159. Then the company sent me two. I tried to return the 2nd but they refused.

I thought a lot of the HD sites really took off during the MSN $300 (or was it $400) dollar deal where you actually didn't have to sign up for anything due to a loophole.

you had to sign up for their service, but you could cancel right after with no penalty.

There also aren't nearly as many hot deals, and the hot deals aren't as hot as they were back then.

Y'know, when I had to trudge 20 miles through the snow, barefoot, uphill to get to the HD forum.

if i remember my internets correctly, hot deals was started to get all the WMCs out of OT. then fatwallet was started up by some people who wanted the deals to be a bit more free-wheeling than what was allowed in HD. this was all before my time, so it's just bits and pieces that i've heard over the years

LOL - I bought a Gold's Gym weight bench with my value bucks, and they ended up shipping me 3 of them. I kept the first, I sent the second back, then realized that place was just a cluster-fuck, so I sold the 3rd.

I think my UPS guy hated me that week.
