The sad thing is, we don't have to resort to lies, but the Bush Administration is tempted to do so anyways. There's a recent study, not sure what it was called - heard about it on NPR, this study surveyed about 40 countries and it showed a correllation between people liking America and how well their economy is doing. Lets face it, the US is a modern world empire and it holds power throughout most of the world not through military, but the economic. This means that we can best influence people through economic means, because that is where we hold our power.

Or we could just resort to lies propaganda and distortion, because that would be easy.

I know you are ignorant . . . I have pity. The North IS the South. The North and South are essentially an estranged couple. They love each other but are constantly at one another's throat about the minor and the major. But they share a common past and they desire a common future.

The North is a closed society but it has been reaching out to the South for years. Restoration of the railroad and family visits are the beginning but progress will continue to be slow until someone at the top of NK decides warm food and running water is a tolerable existence.

Bush in his ultimate lack of wisdom retarded the reconciliation. What some pinhead at the White House thought was clever "Axis of Evil" was taken very seriously in NK. And one of the first to recognize it was South Korea . . . they weren't consulted apparently. Now that NK is complaining about James Bond, more people are aware of the fragile ruling party psyche . . . late b/c of BS political philosophy viewing the 21st century through Cold War spectacles.

Dave, I hope you are so wrong. I had forgotten about Olsen. I'm sure all Americans have been touched by the loss of life on 9/11 and I really feel for the guy. If Ashcroft and Bush are really listening to him we are going to be in a world of hurt; at home and abroad.

I don't think I'm wrong (or I wouldn't have posted it ) and I've been saying for about a year now that I wasn't comfortable with him in that job. I feel for the guy but I don't see how he can be objective. Ashcroft should have given him another assignment after 9/11.

BTW I think Ashcroft and Olsen are going to be on Larry King tonight. The show is usually a feel good circle jerk but I'm going to watch it anyway.

For those of you who don't know, Ted Olsens's wife died in one of the planes (Pentagon?) on 9/11. As solicitor general he is the guy who advises Ashcroft on Constitutional matters and argues the cases in court.
