The break room table

I work in an office complex where several small offices lease their space from a management company. There is a common break room shared by everyone. Some lawyer who has his offices up here left a tray of sandwiches sitting on the common break room table. They were supposed to be for a client he had coming into his office. However neither he or the client got any as they were all gone by 1:30pm when the client showed up.
Now he is going around yelling at everyone and trying to charge people for the sandwiches they ate.
:disgust:

So who else has a common table where food is left for anyone who wants it? Apparently he has never heard of this and thinks we're making it up to cover our theft.
 
I would have eaten one too. Common room + tray of food(without something obviously saying don't touch) = freebies
 
Well he knows now. The appropriate response to any further attempt to raise the matter is 'fuck off'.
 
If it looked like it had already been picked from yes, but if it appeared that it hadn't even been opened, I wouldn't want to be the first to indulge.
 
He's in the wrong, but to be nice, I'd probably pay him anyway. He should have put a note by the tray if he wanted them saved.

I wouldn't want to be the first either. I would have waited to see if someone else took one and then assumed they were fair game.
 
we have a table in the break room where food is placed and such, almost never labled. HOWEVER 100% of the people here will ask someone if they know what the food is for, and if that person does not know they go find someone who does before eating it or not eating it depending on what/who it is for.
 
Out on the table with no sign or anything else is fair game, especially so on a friday or monday when its more common to have snacks and free food out for employees.

He's in the wrong.. but I'd still offer to help pay for them as long as he knows he's in the wrong.

i would probably do the same, but there's only 1 company. a common break room shared by multiple companies is just like a free for all, imo. should have kept it in his office.
 
If it is a covered tray of sandwiches it would be appropriate to ask someone first. If it is an open tray on the table in the common room it is fair game.

How is he approaching everyone, wouldn't everyone that was eating them not be in his office section? Therefore is he going into the other business areas accusing the people. If so, I would think you could get him for trespassing.
 
If it's one person's food, then no, no touchy. But if it's a TRAY of food, left out in the breakroom and some have been taken, I could see poeple assuming it was fair game.
 
Leaving an open tray out in the breakroom with no label is basically saying "free food!" to anyone who walks in. This is the case EVERYWHERE.

Based on what we know of the story so far, it sounds like this lawyer is an idiot.
 
echo what everyone else already said plus add that since it was 1:30, after lunch, on Friday it's safe to assume that it's leftovers from a meeting or party
