Mines. Cheap, effective, low maintenance. There are very few problems you can't solve with mines.

Mines drift, are nearly impossible to dig out in case Mexico is annexed one day and are a very weak deterrent against desperate population who has nothing to lose. Expect some to make a dash for it, maybe encouraged by the business end of an AK-47 of some drug lord.

A fence is excellent, US can also buy some automated, remote controlled .50 cal turrets from Israel. Very efficient stuff.

We can build one of those invisible electronic fences! Of course that would require that all Mexican citizens wear a shock collar, but that shouldn't be a problem, right

Or we could install motion sensing gun turrets every 100yds are so along the border, just keep the ammo hoppers refilled and your good to go!

Motion and thermal. Multiple modes will be quite helpful. Also, you can put them about a mile apart - check the ranges on sniper kills; you can just use a modified .50 machine gun.
