Still don't believe that people will take advantage of the system? Think again.

LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) -- Some California drivers are resorting to desperate measures to beat the surge in gas prices at the pump -- deliberately running dry on the state's freeways and simply waiting for rescue.

"Every time fuel goes up, we start noticing it. But right now we are noticing it a lot more," Andy Lujan, owner of California Coach Towing in Orange County, said Tuesday.

Lujan's 20 trucks roam the busy freeways of Orange and Los Angeles counties as part of a publicly funded patrol that gives a free gallon of gas to drivers who have run out of fuel. It also offers other basic assistance to drivers whose vehicles have broken down.

"You say to some of them 'hey, you've run out of gas' and they say 'yeah, it's too expensive.' I think the percentage is going to increase," Lujan said.

Gas prices in California, where the car is king, are some of the highest in the nation at more than $3 a gallon and rising. (Watch why a gas station in the South got sued for its cheap gas prices -- 1:13)

Moshe Ben Dayan, whose TipTopTow company performs a similar service in Los Angeles' affluent west side, said some people were taking advantage of the freeway service patrol.

"There was one guy a while back who was stopping every morning and trying to get his one free gallon," said Dayan. "I think it is going to be more drastic when the price of gas is closer to $4 a gallon."
Can anyone suggest why the state should just give gas away to these people? This seems like an extreme method to get a free ride somewhere, but apparently the price is right.

why do we deserve high gas prices?

I was referring to their highway pickup program.

Nobody deserves high gas prices any more than they deserve low gas prices.

That just creates more risk to other drivers and slows the freeways down.

I think this has more to do wth people's mindset than the program that is setup.

My wife had to use this service very recently. It really helps.

Who ever said there weren't those who'd take advantage of the system? What makes CA any different than Texas, New York or Alabama?

Way to stereotype a whole population based on a minuscule number of free loaders.

Then just mail them a $300 bill for towing instead. Problem solved.

Hey, this doesn't sound like a bad idea. After all, the socialist state of California has a huge budget surplus....ooops, wait a minute.......:p

Wow, ONE gallon of gas for people stranded on the side of the freeway and suddenly CA is a socialist state? Pffft, GG retards. Nothing like hyperbole to ruin whatever lame point you were trying to make.

What utter nonsense. You would need to drive to a freeway and time it so you ran out of gas on the freeway. Then wait for a tow truck to find you and give you a gallon of gas.
You would need to be an idiot to do that.
It is almost a CERTAINTY that the high price of gas is causing people who lack funds to drive down their tanks because they can't afford to put more gas in and are getting caught in the risk of, "How far can I go before Empty means Empty.
It has nothing to do with socialism or California.
It is all about the high price of gas and the low wages people are getting.

it's used as an illustration how any social program will be taken advantage of. that you attack the form of the argument rather than the substance of it is a logical fallacy. you've provided no actual counter argument. why even bother posting?

No. The entire premise is flawed. This post has nothing to do about the "boon of socialism" and the topic summary is completely flawed since there is NO evidence presented that supports "CA residents running out of gas on purpose"
In fact common sense indicates that if gas is so expensive that people are struggling to put it in their tanks they SHOULD run out more often.
The entire thread is fallacious.

well what is this then?

Yeah right. Throw out the law of physics?
This "one guy a while back" managed to know when to drive onto the freeway just in time to run out?"
Then throw out the law of sanity. Well, maybe. So you're whole thread is based on one guy who was getting a few free gallons of gas a week by going to extradorinary measures?
How about posting a thread on corporations that have plead guilty to billions of dollars in fraud?
At least from the number and amount we can draw the conclusion (like you did) that corporations will always steal from people.

I'm sorry, but the effort/risk-value ration is extremely out of whack on this.

You'd have to be the most desperate homeless guy to even try taking advantage of this. Hmmm, lessee an hour + wait on the side of a CA freeway risking your life and probably your only posession (CA fwys are dangerous places to hang out by the way) in exchange for 1 gallon of gas ($3 value) which will maybe get you 30-40 miles tops.

Yeah, I can see how everyone will be taking advantage of this! Oh teh noes - teh socialists are coming!

What is your point? Some people will take advantage of anything. Look at Dubya.
