The BMW 545i

There was a new 2006 BMW 545i loaded with 800 miles at the dealership for $43K. Something seems fishy about it since it goes for much more. The dealership said it was because the car was a demo car but I'm thinking it was an accident car.

What could be the problem?

i'd say go for it as long as they will give you the 50,000 mile warranty with it.

yup squeeze a warranty out of them, and it doesn't matter what the hell is wrong with the car

I don't think the vehicle was titled. From what I hear, a lot of cars come wrecked to dealerships where they just fix them up.

It is tempting though despite the fact I don't like how the car looks.

Be careful with demo cars. I have heard from others that there are certain warranty restrictions for demos, something about the warranty ending half a year early. Make sure you read the fine print before signing anything, dont just ask since they won't tell you everything.

take it to a body shop or mechanic

they should have something that measures the thickness of the paint to tell if there has been body work done

If it was damaged en route, it probably won't be in carfax. All damages occurring during shipment are fixed in one of BMW's distribution centers. Technically, they don't have to tell owners picking up their cars that they were even damaged since the DC is still considered a factory.

Sales of 5-series have been very weak, that's a lot of miles for a "new" car, and I believe that the 545i is from the 2005 year - which they're probably trying to clean out for the 2006 models. All of that together could have concievably dropped the price that much.

Still though, you don't lose anything by running a carfax on the vin #.

yeah,
90% of the time you can tell fairly easily. Look for non-oem welds in the front and back

ANY collision not filed with insurance won't show up on carfax...
