The blame game and V tech.

This is apparently a big thing around Penn State, and I assume at other schools. I personally agree with it. This site Text is a petition to try to stop the destruction of two more people's lives over these horrible events. Personally, I feel far to often people are tried and convicted in the media long before they have their day in court. No one could have foresaw what was going to happen at virginia tech last week. The school needs to heal, I personally think this will help.

Petition text quoted from the website:
To Governor Timothy M. Kaine and members of the Board of Visitors of Virginia Tech:

We, the undersigned students, alumni, faculty, staff, and friends of Virginia Tech, fully support the decisions made and the actions taken by President Charles W. Steger, Virginia Tech Police Chief Wendell Flinchum, the Virginia Tech administration, and members of law enforcement in response to the shootings at West Ambler-Johnston and Norris Halls on the campus of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University on Monday, April 16, 2007.

We feel that these individuals and groups, especially Dr. Steger and Chief Flinchum, have borne the brunt of unwarranted criticism by members of the media.

We understand that they did their best to make life and death decisions with limited information, and that they acted in the best interests of the students, faculty, and staff of Virginia Tech.

We support Dr. Charles Steger and Wendell Flinchum, and we want them to continue to serve Virginia Tech.

By submitting this form, I affirm my support for Dr. Charles W. Steger and Wendell Flinchum, and I agree with the preceding statements. I understand that my email may be used to contact me to confirm my intention to sign this petition.

No offense to the people that were actually affected by what happened, but the whole VT in the news got old after about the first day. I really don't care anymore, as "cruel" as that sounds. Dozens of people die senselessly every day.

No much point in posting in this thread then, huh?

No... People do not want a scapegoat. The media wants a story.

Ding ding ding, I've seen headlines in google news reporting exactly how many shots fired, what brand guns, what type of ammo. And people keep eating the ****** up.

It's human not to care if it doesn't affect you. Hell, VT is being reenacted every day somewhere in Africa, and no one cares. I don't "care" that much either, despite the facts that I have friends who lost people, I didn't lose anyone, so the natural human reaction is to acknowledge and move on.

Sure there is, thats my opinion. You might not like it, but it wasn't intended to troll.

Perhaps you weren't trying to troll, but perhaps you weren't necessarily fully on topic either. And if you stopped caring after the first day, why is your last post in the 1800+ post thread dated April 21st, five days after?

if you want to think that, nothing's going to change your mind. but the few people i know who attend Virginia Tech were pissed about the university's response to the shootings - no media influence there.

I thought it was kinda crazy when they dug up his ebay account and some of the clips that he used were in his feedback. Again put blame on Seung-Hui Cho right were it belongs.

You got me. It is off topic, and I do get bored of playing Guitar Hero 2 eventually.

What were they to do? Shootings happen everywhere. There is probably a shooting happening right now. Should we start closing down things? Every time someone dies are we to alert the nation. No One. Absolutely No One could have predicted that kid was going to snap like he did. Sorry. The V tech people and alumni's I know agree with that.

IMO, if I were a student there I wouldn't sign anything or pass any judgment until I had all available facts, guess I'd wait for the final police report 😛

Unfortunately the media doesn't allow that luxury.

whats the issue with these two people exactly? Is it their decision not to close campus after the first shooting?
I'm sorry, I would never even support that petition if thats the case. They should have closed campus when a shooting occurred and the shooter was unaccounted for. To me, that seems like a reasonable decision. And again, if that is the case, why are so many people blind to that mere fact? As a student as a university, especially one as large and with as many students as mine, I would certainly hope someone had the idea to lock campus down.

if this isn't what the petition is about, then please ignore this post of mine. 😉

What were they to do? More than they did, thats for sure. Hell, at my last university I got email alerts whenever someone was mugged or assaulted near the campus. If there had been a god damned double homicide in one of the dorms we would've known about just a little quicker than ~2hrs after the police had been notified.

exactly. and the main point is that the gunner was unaccounted for. You don't have to make any judgements as to whether its going to turn into a massacre, but you have to take into account you don't know where the gunner is, and what his motives and intentions are. that's enough to make a decision on. Not sit there on your a$$ and ponder.

Alright then ... I didn't know you went to Babysitter U. I work as an EMT at Penn State where 40000 people go to school. We had a serial rapist, quite a bunch of homicides recently, a rampant couple weeks of violent break-ins, and big assaults every week. We don't get updates every time something happens. We read about them in the news the next day.
They were containing the crime scene. What evidence did they have that the guy was going to take two hours off and then attack a group of classrooms?
