The bitter irony of warez

You know what one of the funny things about warez is? The fact that in some ways it's the exact same thing that the big guys(big business, government etc) do but in this respect it's the little guy taking what he wants. Big business & governments have done this for mellenia. That is, taking what didn't belong to them. It was even referred to in the bible as, "stealing away of the livelihood" of peoples. The reason i say it's funny is because now it's the little guy striking upward and combined the little guys have power. The big guys don't like this one bit and you see them exercising their disapproval every time you go to see a movie. Sure piracy is not really funny but then neither is the thievery that happens from the top down which is not even on the same scale. It is interesting to think about it in this respect however as it's a rather unique phenomenon where history is concerned.

Hopefully it will help cut some of the fat out of the "industry". Lots of people making money off of intellectual property that shouldn't be.

I heard your dad went into a restaurant and ate everything in the restaurant and they had to close the restaurant

yes, its a very interesting thing that has happened. only with the spur of big business with its inhereint greed and technology in the hands of the common man did this come about.

Are you trying to deny that corporate greed doesn't exist or are you part of the 10% of America that makes 100K+ a year?

Pretty bad analogy if you ask me. Assuming you're making an analogy.

I think he is quoting "The Simpsons". Same guy that owned me when he was quoting a line from "Snatch" He apparently really likes movies/TV.

Your life is the sum of a remainder of an unbalanced equation inherent to the programming of the the message board. You are the eventuality of an anomaly, which despite my sincerest efforts I have been unable to eliminate from what is otherwise a harmony of mathematical precision. While it remains a burden assiduously avoided, it is not unexpected, and thus not beyond a measure of control. Which has led you, inexorably, here.

yea they spent 15-20 million developing doom3. what were they thinking, they coulda hired Perry404 for a can of coke instead and saved a ton of money.

The message board is older than you know. I prefer counting from the emergence of one integral anomaly to the emergence of the next, in which case this is the sixth version.

Yes I know it is old. I have an invalid user name after all! But I joined after the great BBS days. Or so I heard they were great. Haven't really been counting versions because I have been in and out of having an internet connection.

It is interesting reading your reactions. Your five predecessors were by design based on a similar predication, a contingent affirmation that was meant to create a profound attachment to the rest of the posters. While the others experienced this in a very general way, your experience is far more specific. Vis-a-vis, love.

I think that the whole software piracy thing is something that gets phased out of your life as you grow older and gain more disposable income.

when I was a teenager (making $5.15/hour at Burger King and only working 16 hours/week), just about every piece of software on my machine was pirated. now that I have enough money so that a $50 game or $75 program doesn't impact my finances at all, it's a better expendature of time to suck it up and buy the product retail, than to spend a few hours downloading it off of Usenet or P2P (not to mention, with P2P there's always the risk of wasting time by downloading a bogus or corrupted file).

Nowadays, the only time I'm reduced to software piracy is when I'm looking for software that's no longer availible (ie: older versions of programs that are superior to the newest versions, and in cases where the software makers went out of business *cough321cough*).

Maybe this is stretching the limits of justification, but I think it does help build brand loyalty to a certain extent... the software that I was stealing when I was 15 is the same brand of software that I'm buying retail today.

Only exceptions are horrendously over-priced software like Photoshop (I've never used it, but I can understand why someone would want to download a $700 program instead of buying it).

Piracy is stealing. Plain and simple.

Look at Doom 3.

It's pirated.

Don't even try to tell me that id software with it's what 20 employees is a corporate monolith stealing my livelihood and killing babies.

There is no MAN. There's people like you and me that are succesfull, whether it's John Carmack in control of id's 20 people, or Bill Gates in control of Microsoft.

Just because these people become successful and rich they don't suddenly become EVIL CORPORATE FACELESS MONOLITHS OF LIVELIHOOD TAKINGNESS.

It's all people.

When you pirate software, you steal from someone. Corporation or not.

I don't like catfish.
