i am gettign this card really soon, i plan to unlock the extra pipes and the vertex shader when i do. My question is, does this process shorten the lifespan of my card? if it does, is it because mostly of the temp?

*also, if im not totally satisfied with the stock fan, i plan to buy one of those nv5 fans. Has anyone here put that fan in a 6800nu (not gt or ultra). JUSt want to make sure it fits.

No, the lifespan won't be any less. The cards that unlock properly were just good chips that nvidia binned down to keep from flooding the market with too many 6800GT chips. Temps shouldn't be any different unless you overclock.

I have the NV Silencer on my 6800OC and it works very well. :)

Have the same card and the NV5. I'm really surprised the NV5 dropped my temps down so low. I have never hit about 50c with the NV5..but would get up to 55 with the stock cooler during some intense CS gaming :) Great card, great cooler.

Yes..yes I was and the last shader. No artifacts, no stuttering. Overclocks well too.

i plan to use rivatuner, the instructions seemed easier to unlock the extra pipelines and vertex shader.

What software did you use, was it complicated?

I used Rivatuner. However, i'm having a weird problem now. Before with the stock heatsink I had no problems with the pipes being opened and enabling all the eye candy. But now after installing the NV5 and overclocking I get major screen artis. Sure I could underclock my vid card but why? I disable the pipes, sigh, but get the last shader unlocked. I know if I keep my overclock down and keep the pipes open im fine but I really don't need the extra pipes at this time.

Pipes and shader unlocked. GPU/MEM 360/860. Odd I only got 10 extra MHz on the core, even with the NV5, but I can't complain.

but remember, the locked pipes could always be fubar and they just locked them so they wouldn't have to scrap the card and made it a 6800nu. always something to think about when purchasing a card to unlock locked pipes.

you ALWAYS take a gamble unlocking these lower end 6800 cards. I got a 6800 GT for a great price and it runs fine at Ultra levels + with no artifacts and all the channels opened already, no "luck" invloved. 450 core and 1250 or so for memory with no problems. Scores about 13,000 on Sysmark03 on its first test. :)
