'98 no question for me. So many genre defining games. Grim Fandango, Starcraft, and Half Life alone make it my favorite year.

1997 because of Ultima Online (even though I didn't start playing until 1998).

I chose 1998, but my most played games of all time were definitely from 2000: D2 and Counter Strike.

I also can't separate 1998-2000. That whole era just meshes so well together. The fact that I was in high school and had no worries or responsibilities and that my city was introducing a dirt cheap high speed WAN that networked the entire city together to make multiplayer gaming with my friends so easy was icing on the cake.

Games not mentioned that I associate with that time, but may have come a few years later:
Rune(you know, the viking game). My friends and I multiplayed this game way to much. This was released in 2000
Clive Barkers Undying (2001)
Jedi Knight(1995-2003

1998. Battlezone is an overlooked game that's truly one of the best PC games ever. And then StarCraft and Half-Life round it off to make it an unbeatable year.

lol, I had to go 2000.

Came to AT after a session of CS:S, and even as we speak my D2 bot is running strong

1999 for me - Heroes 3, System Shock 2 and Freespace 2 were absolutely amazing games. I'm pretty sure Heroes 3 is the game I spent the most time with, ever. I remember my Pentium 100 was having problems playing it with music on (it was in mp3). Had to disable music and it would run fine. Ohh the fun times :D

M&M VII, MW3 and AvP get a memorable mention too :)

I went with 1999 because it also had Everquest. Deux Ex has held up so well (IMO)

1998 for me. Although Quake 2 was launched in 12/97, I think of it more as a 1998 staple. Best FPS ever IMHO.

I don't get why 2000 didn't get the most votes... the poll is for the best year of gaming... 2000 would include all of the games made in the previous 2 years. :p

Tie between 98 and 99. I played more of the titles from 98 but Quake III Arena from 99 is bar none my most played game ever. I used to come home from high school and "practice" for hours for clan matches. I logged a retarded amount of hours in that game.

My favorite era for nolstalgia purposes was '92/'93:

- X-Wing
- Wolfenstein 3D
- Doom
- Syndicate
- Myst
- Day of the Tentacle 2
- Star Control 2
- Sim City 2000

That's a little bit old school, but of the bolded titles I don't even know which game I wasted the most time in other than it was hundreds of hours for each. It's true that none of them are really that great today, but I would love to see both a Syndicate and X-Wing/Tie-Fighter remake using 2010 technology. How could Syndicate 2010 not sell a bazillion copies?

I have to agree with this. I loved all those games (except DotT and SC2, since I didn't play them.) I played through Syndicate more times than I can remember. I can't for the life of me understand why there hasn't been even a clone of that great game, let alone a real sequel. (Ok, there was a sequel, and I played that too, but only one!)

1998 - Half-Life

This game changed FPS forever... Gave them a story, high production values. It instantly made all the older FPS games outdated overnight. I tried to finish Half-Life 2, I really did. I've tried several times now, never had been interested enough to finished it. Shame.

1999 - Homeworld

Still been nothing like it, great game, great story, easy to play... I played it again a few years ago, still loved every minute of it. Homeworld 2 was technically superior, but with a so-so story.

2000 - Half-Life: Counter-Strike

Damm this game sucked up a lot of hours of play. First game to really get me into on-line play. Last year tried playing it again, found it to be shallow and boring. Interesting how times change your view.

Doom, Quake, Descent and Warcraft all at work via the Lan during lunches.. good times for sure! It was a decent sized corporation too. now, they would have a fit if we were playing games on the LAN at lunch.
