So what cars would you recommend for around 5k?

i plan to be able to drive it problem free for AT LEAST 5 years

Anything that says Kia. They are the best cars.

CR is one of the worse places to get advice about cars. Their reviews have been shown to be flawed and highly biased. Their survey is unscientific and flawed as well.

Also on a used car once it hits about 3+ years old the reliability can have more to do with the last owner then the car itself.

if you read the list you'd notice that the M3, corvette, and porsche boxster are listed

at under $20k, maybe a consideration. Anything above that I'm not sure I'd want to pay that much for used performance vehicles that may or may not have been abused. Having said that... I'm not sure I want a 7 year old car at $20k either. That's a lot of money to pay for someone else's problems, or at least the headaches that may come with it.

The CR reviews are not perfect and I disagree with many of them, but on the other hand - buying a used car backed by some reliability data is better than just shooting blanks without any reference...

I say don't use this guide as a sole resource but consider it as one of the many factors when buying a used/new car.
Also this guide is free and very easy to use...

The best for who? Old and boring people?

:frown:

I have to say I am surprised to write it, but after seeing some of the prices on late model fusions and how cheap they can be, as a practical car at low cost it would in fact be on my short list right now, probably at the top. I'm really impressed with what scoobmaster got for $11k.

Ditto...
But you may also consider Mazda 6. They have plenty of low millage 07s and 08s in my area within the similar price range (on autotrader). Stick shifts however are harder to find.

On that note, the two share a lot of underpinnings. Both are stellar cars.

I have been looking for a deal on a 1998/99 Toyota RAV4 for my wife. She likes that particular body style.

However, they aren't 4-6,000 unless beat to shit. About $9k is typical for a 99 with decent mileage.

😕 WTF? Where do you live that a 99 Rav4 goes for 9k average? The PPV at KBB is $5500 range for a 99 with a lot of options at 80k.

Also I hope your wife has driven a Rav4. They are slow as hell. When me and my wife had a Rav4 we had to turn the AC off to get it really moving in the summer, esp if there were more then 2 people in it and/or supplies.

maybe something wrong with her's my mom has a 99 and it's not fast, but decent.

You can check autotrader...do any distance for shits and giggles.

KBB <> real cost on certain vehicles. Older Porsches would be steals.
