The best thing on the internet besides free porn is...

...wikipedia. It may be lambasted by academia but I always go to it for information. That site is highly underrated in my opinion. My main interest in math and economics so the info is easy to cross-reference. Whenever I go there for one thing, I find myself with 10 or 11 linked tabs on related topics.

I like Wikipedia too. Sometimes you don't need definitive information, and if nothing else, it's a good starting off point.

but why go to a site that you have to cross-reference data to make sure it's right? Why not just go to the source to begin with?

Everyone claims to hate it but everyone uses it. :awe:

I like the fact that I can usually find a new bands music on youtube or something similar so I can test the waters before opening my wallet.

I think that's what I like best about the internet. Also, it gives voice to anyone with access to a computer and internet connection. There's a ton of amazing musicians out there that no one would have heard of 20 years ago.

It's much easier to get an overview on, say, Kalman filters than to pay IEEE for some papers from the 60s or buy a book with a relevant chapter or two.

Agreed. Actually I'd say it's BETTER than free porn. Yes people will bash me for saying it but there's actual content there. I often "surf" wikipedia for hours on end.

No argument here. When I discovered wikipedia it was like finding a gold mine. I google a lot of stuff and wikipedia comes up near the top of the list very often. I probably take that hit first at least 50% of the time. Wonderful site. Plus, they aren't AFAIK particularly commercial. The founder makes occasional pleas for donations to keep the whole thing working. It's basically volunteer powered in terms of the content.

Never got into the whole Facebook thing. Only social networking site I use is StumbleUpon. I tend to make fun of anyone using the big 3 Facebook, Myspace, Twitter etc... But some day I'll probably join when I get some friends 🙂

Anandtech Forums is the closest thing to a social networking site I use. No Facebook, no MySpace, no Twitter. Technically, I have a MySpace password and username, but I've never configured the thing and never go there. I only did that so I could access information. They don't let you if you're not registered.

IMDb is a great time waster as well
Well, I'm registered at Rottentomatoes.com, but haven't gone there in months. I used to hang out there some, but not a ton. That can really be a time waster. Tons of people there are firmly addicted.

I kill a lot of time at work there. I can spend hours jumping from random search to random search.

I can't say I store any of the knowledge but its fun to learn.

Having grown up without the Internet and living a good 30 years before it existed, I can't explain sufficiently just how awesome the Internet is. Imagine installing Computer Hardware without a Manual, no info printed on the PCB, and no Internet. It can be done, as I did it myself, but it is risky and rather annoying. Back then you took your chances with Trial/Error(my method of choice) or you went to the Library and searched Computer mags with the hope of stumbling upon such things. These days I can find detailed Instructions within minutes and not having to physically go anywhere.
