The Best Server CPUs part 2: the Intel "Nehalem" Xeon X5570

Could be. I had the chance to review it and didn't know it was gone until I saw this thread!

The Nehalem architecture definitely was built for servers; the performance was amazing. The dual-quad core X5500 series was keeping up with 24-core systems in some of the benches, that was amazing.

Same here. Was browsing through the benchmarks and then POOF. Gone.

Now THAT'S a low post count...and talk about waiting a while to make your first post!

My account was setup a few years ago, but I just started posting. I want to see the article. 🙁

Anand missed the W5580 which is a 3.2ghz stock gainestown.

"Anand missed the W5580 which is a 3.2ghz stock gainestown."

Wrong twice ;-). First of all, it is not Anand. Secondly, it is a server review. The hot headed W5580 is clearly targeted at workstations, not the server market. In the server world, 130W server CPUs are getting very unpopular. Our review is completely targeted at server use. And we do mention this in the article...

thanks for the explaination!

And i retract my comment!

Great review there. One more nail in the coffin Intel is building around AMD. (How many more of these hammer-blows to the head can AMD absorb before they just die?)

I loved this line:
The most power hungry 2.93GHz Nehalems are sold in the desktop market (130W TDP), while the "greenest" ones are sold in the server market (95W).

Now, my question - since these chips are also s1366 - will they work on X58 desktop boards like the C2D Xeons did on P45 etc boards? Granted they are more expensive but the lower power consumption would offset that difference over time and they should run significantly cooler.

Or I could just stick to my plan - waiting for Westmere...

I wonder about this as well, and I am very curious to see the VID amounts for these chips. I suspect they will be in the 1.0-1.15 range, such as many people are able to downclock their i7 chips to in order to decrease heat. In my experience, it was possible to hit 3.2ghz at 1.09v on a default VID of 1.2675. It would be interesting to see how these overclock.

u cant overclock them.

they wont work right overclocked in a regular X58.

These gainestowns are 2xqpi enabled chips and not 1xqpi enabled chips.

LOL. (no hard feelings, aigo 😛 )

While I think most of us could see this drubbing coming from a mile away, the effects of HT on Nehalem's performance in server-side applications is simply amazing.

Agreeded. Its actually a little sad. I do feel bad for AMD , For hector to have such a hugh lead . and piss everthing away because they sat on it. Many you guys know I knew this was coming alobg time ago . Remember the debates about Merom . I pretty much sunk everones ship . But I go tbanned . So I guess I was loser. In debate. But it started befor that . Those topics will come back when the time is right.

The point Iam trying to make is thats alot of years ago . Yet me . Someone who can barely put together a comprehendable sentance. New more about what intel was up to than AMD Management . THAT strikes me as just boggling. Same with Banking system . I knew more than the experts. SO me there is something really terriably wrong here.

These People who command outragious wages and compensation are full of themselves. There nobetter or smarter than common everday jerk.

I really Think that people who lost $$$ on AMD should be looking into why they lost money. I would of had AMD ready for Intel . ME . I do not belong in a job like that . But I could have done better. Something real wrong here. With everthing. Don't get me wrong . People like albert. their way not normal they just know things. I know their people in companies way smart. But their are the well trained monkeys also Lots and lots of these. The problem with these monkeys . Is they think there smarter than the other monkeys , Guess what there not . and their screwing everthing up. This should never have happened to AMD. TO lose your lead on HT and ondie controller from intels first effort. All the while setting on what they had. Unforgiveable management.

Great review. Nemesis did you forget to take your meds today? And does anyone know what happened to xtremesystems.org? (haven't they been down for days; someone over there also wanted to review a gainestown rig so I wanted to check it out - see I'm not off topic)
