The best PS2 RPG

There is no best as that's a personal opinion but The Final Fantasy games are very popular (I like X but never really got into X2). I like the Xenosaga games as well. The Baldur's Gate games were pretty good.
Shadow Hearts was pretty good.
I tried to get into the Suikoden games but I was bored. Never got into Arc The Lad, but I did like the PS1 version.

Have you played the classic PS1 RPGs like the older Final Fantasy 4 - 9 and Chrono Trigger?

Many times. My fav rpgs are Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross. Just wondering is there was anything out for the PS2 that compares.

FFX (don't play X-2), Xenosaga1 and 2, and Shining Force Neo just came out with good reviews. Everything else is pretty bland, cuz I can't remember anymore than those. Star Ocean 3 was alright, but i got bored of it.

I really wanted to like FFX but I didn't. It was too much video and not enough fun.
And I bought X-2. Mistake. Just because it is made by SquareSoft doesnt make it good. Not anymore.
Star Ocean sorta bored me from the beginning.

How about Kinkdom Hearts...I know it is based off of Disney characters, but it was not that bad. you can pick it up for $20.

nothing really compares to the old school stuff like FF1-6, the two Chrono games, the mana series, Lunar.

they just don't make'em like that anymore =T

I have seen it many times but passed it up because it looked like a kids-type game.
What kind of battle system does it have?

I think the reason why is because many companies focus more on eye candy than developing solid gameplay and a good storyline.

Kingdom Hearts has a battle system a bit like the new Zelda games (where you hack and slash away at your own free will), but replace Link's gadgets (like the boomerang) with some small magic attacks. It is worth a buy (especially for its current price).

As for other good PS2 RPGs: FFX wasn't that bad (again, it's another cheap one), but I don't know if I can recommend many that are on that special, upper tier shared by titles such as Chrono Trigger and FF7.

ya Kingdom Hearts was a sweet game. i passed it up at first by the kiddie look of it but another RPG fan recomendd it to me. the battle system is very good as is the rest of the game.

Indeed. Like in FF1 when Black Mage and Fighter engaged in a philosophical discussion concerning organized religion and its effect on human development. The symbolism was just breathtaking.

Castlevania : Symphony of the night.

play it on PS2 all over again 🙂

best castlevania game EVER.

though i'd call it more action/adventure with a smattering of RPG elements.
