I just got my DS and i'm pretty new to this whole thing and the hardware selection for playing roms and DS backups are pretty wide.

All the M3 options, the G6, the passkey, and the others. Which roles do each of these play and which ones should i get?

Can someone help me make sense of all this and make a recommendation on which solution i should get?

i'm enjoying my DS-Xtreme.

USB, drag and drop, no fuss, no ROM trimming, etc.

*EDIT* the passkey is a Slot-1 (DS slot) device that essentially emulates DS boot sequences. You need it to play DS roms for those devices that are Slot-2 (like the G6).

The DS-Xtreme is a consolidated, slot-1 device that incorporates a passkey. However, it does not play GBA roms

Whats the difference between the M3 DS Simply and the M3 Perfect lite besides with the Perfect lite you can backup your games from Slot-1? Oh, and the M3 DS Simply is about half the price too and it doesnt require a passkey (extra $20).

Stay away from a DS-Xtreme unless you have money to blow. It's 512MB for $110. Go with something cheaper with more space, I'd suggest a M3 DS Simply or R4(same thing, really) + a 1 or 2GB MicroSD.

Also, passkeys aren't that expensive. Check out http://www.realhotstuff.com for some decent pricing(without the long shipping from hong-kong or whereever)

But with the M3 DS Simply (slot-1) a passkey isnt required, right?

R4 DS At Modchipstore

Look for a Made in Japan Micro DS (Kingston sells some) or else you may have issues with crashing or slow loading

R4 + Kingston 1gb Microsd from Kaidomain for $43 shipped. Only problem is Castlevania POR will crash 20% of the time (everything else has worked perfectly) and that they take 2 weeks to ship it to ya. Otherwise it's the best deal if you want to wait it out.

You can also get a 1gb Kingston (made in Japan) microsd from Frys.com for $11 shipped.

the DS Simply is basically a passkey with a microSD slot so you don't have to use the GBA slot. Nice, neat, less power needed.

Downside... might take longer for game compatibility, and no GBA emulation (at least last time I checked).

R4 from nxpgame.com. I just bought it for $38 shipped (w/coupon a2007). They ship priority from the US so you get it in 2-3 days. It's identical to the M3 but the updates for the firmware come out 1-2 weeks sooner.
