What would all of you say is the best perfomance laptop to get? Right now I am looking at the new Alienware Area-51m laptop. These are the specs:

Pentium IV 3.2Ghz with Hyper-Threading, AGP 8x, Direct X 9.0
1024MB Corsair DDR ram, upgradeable to 2048MB
80 GB 4200 RPM HDD, Dual Hard drive capability
15.4" WSXGA+ or 16.0" WUXGA LCD Display
1 - 2x DVD-RW
1 - DVD/CD-RW combo drive
Choice of Geforce FX go 5600 128MB or ATI Mobility 9600 128MB, video chip is user upgradeable
Built-in 802.11a+b wireless networking technology
Built-in 3-in-1 Media Card Reader
800MHz Front Side Bus CPU Support
Built-in Digital 5.1 surround sound support
Built-in front infrared port and remote control

Is there anything better. I just want the best. The estimated price is $3400. After this I'm getting the most portable laptop with dvd burner. Which would probably be the Fujitsu T90D.

yes, the file server is 1500gb. I want portable space, not extra luggage.

I do video editing and that seems to eat up space like there's no tomorrow.

JMc Wild,

That by far is going to be the fastest laptop you can get your hands on currently. A secret though is you can find that system cheaper than on alienware. You can go to the american reseller for that system and probably save $200-$300 dollars on it if you wanted. I would recommend you get the 60gb 5400rpm drive and then wait 2-3 months and then pickup the 80gb drive when they have it as a 5400rpm drive

Check out www.pctorque.com They sell Sagers, which are based off Clevo, the OLD A51-M models. However, I encourage you to check out the 8890. It is hefty, but if you're looking for space, power and speed, it has all of what you've mentioned plus the ability to have 2 7200 RPM 60 GB HDD in RAID 0! In another week the Sager 5680 will arrive for preorder, which is slightly smaller and lighter, having only one HDD. However, you can get a primary and secondary battery, and the screen is UXGA (1600x1200). Come over and check out www.pctorque.com and www.talknotebooks.com

Unless you want the spiffy paint job, I'd recommend getting a Sager laptop (Sagers and Alienware laptops are both rebadged Clevo systems) from a Sager reseller. I'm probably going to be getting a Sager 8890 from PCtorque. You can configure a laptop with the exact same specs as that Alienware for $2910.00. PC Torque will also be offering custom paint jobs too (no I don't work for these guys).

Another fairly good reseller is PowerNotebooks (not as cheap as PCTorque though) Both these companies rank pretty good on ResellerRatings.com if that's a concern.

Edit: Heh, someone beat me to the punch. :)
