Dead Space 2 - Not up to par with DS1, but it's still amazing.
Battlefield 3... For PC. =)
Batman AC - I haven't finished it yet, but really impressed.
2) Most disappointing
Dragon Age 2. I didn't play the first, but seeing the same 5 dungeons over and over in the first act was ridiculous. Story was ok though, loved the characters.
3) Biggest surprise
Orcs Must Die
4) Favorite indi-game
Is #3 indie? if so that. Or Limbo.
5) Most overrated
LA Noire

Portal 2 (portal 2 was the only 2011 game I bought)
My other favorites I first played in 2011:
Batman Akrham Asylum - my friend told me to pick this up and it has got to be one of my favorite games of all time

The entire Gears of War series - Still playing through 3 but I like it a lot. It sucks that

Batman Arkham Asylum. I thought it would be good, but move into one of my favorite games of all time category? NEVER. I will be getting City when they fix the 360 save glitch.

How can you say that MW3 is overrated when you claim the only 2011 game you purchased was Portal 2? Also, this is for games released in 2011 - so Asylum would need to be released.

Portal 2(PC)
Brink(PC) - I picked it up a while back in August; aside from its premature release it's a solid game. It's a shame no one's playing it all that much.
Zelda: Skyward Sword - I have not played it yet. But it's Zelda, and I'm already sold based on its reviews, the gameplay footage, the buzz, and it's Zelda - the only game of which I'm regretting selling my Wii.

Of course I haven't tried/bought Rage, Skyrim, Batman:AC, Witcher 2, WH40K:Space Marine, etc.

Civ5(PC) Never tried any of the Civ games, I thought the complaints were due to the game not making any forward steps in the series as a whole, not that the game was mediocre and boooooring by itself. Heard good things about Sins of a Solar Empire (a real-time variant of the genre, I think?) thanks to this forum, will wait until the next exp pack is released.

5) Most overrated: Skyrim - It is very good, but quite a lot of hype for a game that isn't THAT much different than Oblivion and Fallout 3. Paint by the numbers for Bethesda at this point.

6) Most underrated: Duke Nukem Forever - it wasn't great, but it didn't suck as bad as people made it seem, RAGE might actually be a tie for this.

Because I don't need to buy a game to play it. My bro got it.

Also I indicated that I realize asylum wasn't released this year but it was so good it was worth mentioning even tho it took me this long to play it.

Duke nukes forever was actually much worse than some reviews led one to believe. The demo was complete and utter garbage.

1.Top 3- Super Mario 3d World, Ncaa Football 12, Uncharted 3
2. Most dissapointing- LA Noire. Got boring to me very quickly.
3.Biggest surprise- Sonic Generations, Its pretty fun.
4.Indie game- I only played limbo and liked it pretty well.
5. Most overrated- MW3. finished it just to know how the story ended.
6. Most underrated- Dead Island once the kinks were kinda worked out

Shouldn't a requirement of forming a list like this be, you know...to at least actually play what is being nominated?

As for your specific points, yes, there is going to be a backlash against games like Skyrim because of the absolute monstrous HYPE that is built up in the weeks and months prior to, during, and even after release. People expect perfection, and when they don't get it, they're horribly disappointed. Unfairly so, in many cases.
And seriously, never, ever compare Grand Theft Auto to an RPG. Just..don't. "Open world" games aren't a genre. Otherwise the Spider-Man games should be compared to Skyrim and GTA and ArmA II and Gothic. That's not its own genre, it's just a gameplay element a number of games happen to share.

Skyrim is quite flawed, and there a number of niggling (and moderate) points that keep it from being perfect. But there's sooooo much done right that people are willing and able to overlook the shortcomings for the otherwise awesome experience they get. Doesn't make them sheep, and certainly doesn't make the game or Bethesda "failures". Please.

Very emotional response Sulaco. So I'll keep this quick. I don't play overhyped games, so I couldn't nominate something I played. I apologize if this pisses you off, but I was definitely honest with my opinion and gave it more thought than pretty much any other post in this thread.

1. Your post agrees with me, as I've underlined.
2. I never said Skyrim was a bad game. I said it was overhyped. You respond as if I said it was bad. You might want to understand the difference.

I haven't played that many 2011 games but anyway here is what I think:

Dragon Age 2 (unworthy successor as MoO3 & PoP 3D were)

* I have Batman AC, Skyrim and SR3 but have not started them yet. I'm sure they will make it to the 1) list once I finish them.
