And can you play for a while w/o subscribing, to see if it's an experience you'd enjoy? I've never played one myself either, and have heard they can get tedious.

There are some totally free ones out there. The only one I've played (still do after a couple weeks) is Pristontale and it's alright, always several hundred people running around. I don't have any suggestions for other free MMORPGs, try searching around google and see what you can find. :)

My first and only MMORPG was Asheron's Call, and it quickly became an addiction. Some of the current games like Anarchy Online and Asheron's Call 2 (it sucks) let you DL the full client and pay the first month for free.

After that it costs $10-$14 per month to play.

When I was seriously into AC1, the $10/month was nothing and the game was worth WAY more than the $$$ I was paying each month. I eventually quit for several months and no longer play.

I agree with Nohr's suggestion. There are several free MMORPG's out there, and I'd give them a try to see if you like the concept.

I still keep in touch with alot of the friends I made playing AC1 and they are gearing up for the lauch of Horizons (supposed to be the next big thing) on Dec. 9th.

Look for Horizons: Empire of Istaria soon... I'm beta testing it and it's coming along nicely... I haven't checked to see if there's a release date set yet, it's been a while since I've messed with it. Has TONS of content... and the way it's set up, they can easily ad more content just by adding stuff to the database. Everyone seems to like Star Wars Galaxies, I've never played it though, so I can't make any recommendations for or against it.

Everquest has matured a lot over the years. I still pay for my account but my play is casual at best. Worth trying with the new 'all expansions in one' that is for sale now.

For the record I've played UO, EQ, Asheron's Call, DAOC...EQ lasts on in my opinion while it lacks the ability to draw me in right now (most things do, though...)
I can't be held responsible for your life, any significant other, lost sleep, or any bodily harm induced by starting to play this game :D

Oh, might I add... I'm currently playing Gunbound (www.gunbound.net) which is like an anime-characters with gear incarnation (free) sort of MMO modern variation of scorched earth...

Heh, i've played DaoC, UO, Everquest, Lineage WWII online, Anarchy Online, beta tested earth and beyond, beta tested Eve online, star wars galaxies, and now I play Shadowbane. I had a hard time getting into most.. except UO and Shadowbane.

UO rocks :p I had to quit because it was to addictive.
WWII online was fun as hell too, but my cd-key got pirated and became invalid.
Eve and Earth and beyond were just boring right up through final release.
Daoc was decent but tough to get into.
I didnt like EQ's interface at all and didn't get into it.
Shadowbane is a bunch of fun, and is meant for PVP. Lots of PVP in this one. I've played this one the longest probably.
Lineage was just cheap. Not so hot.
Everyone in Anarchy online was like lvl 200 by the time i joined, so i had to much catching up to do.
Star Wars Galaxies is the best looking of em all, but all the servers seem empty. Cant find many people on at once.

I think EQ would be the best choice for a newbie......it's easier than all other MMORPGs to communicate with other players and the developers have made the game more friendly to new players (i.e., getting rid of staring into a spellbook, lesser death penalty, easy travel to other zones via portals). It's a polished game.....as it's been out there for a long time.

Credit card woes......you can buy I think a three month subscription in cash at the store but afterward I think you need a credit card. I think they all do.

I've been playing UO for... more than 7 years now, right? It came out in 1996... or 1997?

It consumed by life for 3 years. Then I took a year off. Then it took another year from me. Then I casually played. And now I don't have it installed, but still pay the monthly fee...

Whatever your friends are playing. Almost every MMRPG needs a little hand holding in the beginning, and these games are much more fun with a group of RL friends then random people.

From what I am hearing though, FFXI might be a good choice since it is hard to permanetly screw up your character. The big problem with MMRPG's is that choices you make in the very beginning come back to haunt you if you do not know what you are doing. From what I hear, FFIX's job system lets you buy down and buy up skills at almost no cost, which would make it the most newbie friendly of ANY mmrpg out there.

P.S. - If this is wrong, please tell me!

Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided

It's a good game but it costs $15 a month that's unaviodable. :(

ohhh... its so tempting to reinstall that game right now. I don't have a charecter though....

As for the credit card....
You dont need one for EQ. I used a debit card to pay. But you dont even need one of those. All you need to do is go down to EB or whatever, and buy a prepaid game card. I think they come in a three month deal. They may only be one month. Either way, you use that thing to get online.

Do not bother with Horizons...for a first game that would be one that just wont give you the feel that you might be looking for.

I want a MMRPG that is like Asheron's Call. You had so much control over your character. It was alot like playing a FPS with crappy graphics and tons of other people. I played that game for 3 years and it was my first MMRPG. I loved it. I quit and started playing Horizons but good graphics are just one aspect of an MMRPG. Lineage II is coming out and that looks VERY fun to me.

Right now, I think EQ, Star Wars Galaxies, AC2 are some of the most popular. It also depends on what kind of genre you are looking for. Space age, fantasy, midevil.... that will go a long way on how interested you become and ultimatly sacrifice your social life for :D

I'd say Everquest for content and just for being so easy to get into. Plus there's always plenty of people around to help you which is very important for any MMORPG with which a player is not familiar (unless you enjoy browsing websites for answers to whatever questions you may have). I've played the standard gamut of MMOs and EQ was the one I enjoyed the most.

If possible, i'd highly recommend starting the game with a friend/girlfriend/wife. My wife and I played together in the same room and it's a significantly improved experience.

Are there any MMORPGs that do not involve magic, demons, spells, etc? I would like to play something in this genre, but everything is sick!
