The BEST heatsink for SocketA no one is buying...

It must be Vantec FCE-62540D. There is a survey about most popular heatsinks and I haven't seen almost anyone mentioning it. Why? According to the review on HardOCP here it perform great, just a degree more than the best heatsink. See this page for a nice comparison. And it's only $19.95 + $5 Priority Mail shipping from Inflow Direct! I really like the Priority Mail option as most of the country gets the heatsink in two days instead of waiting up to seven days via UPS. And the shipping is cheaper via USPS too. Lastly, it's not as loud as FOP38 and the clip is the best I've ever seen. Really easy to put on. I bought it and love it. A great cooler for a great price, I'm surprised more people aren't using it. Any opinions?

That's nice...

But for 8 dollars I got a super cool heatsink and fan from www.tcwo.com...It has a 60mm fan large heatsink and runs around 5800 rpms...much quiter then my original hsf that ran near 7200rpms. Plus by getting it at same time with my new cpu I was able to get 1 year warranty on my oem chip....

tbird 1.1....idle 36 degrees celsius, highest load to date seen 44 celsius
tbird 1.1@1.2...idle 38 degress celsius, highest load under same conditions 45 celsius

sidenote: the last two night it got cool here in oregon and my office temp was like 67 fahrenheit (normally 73) the cpu temp idle dropped to 29 celsius...wth...

edit: I am definitely not saying it is the best....however per price, per noise, and effectiveness of cooling...its sounds pretty damn good. And its just about dummy proof, no way to install backwards.

I said the "best heatsink no one is buying", not the "best" heatsink 🙂 The best heatsink costs much more $$$, but I think this Vantec is the best for the money.

Duvie, don't be so sure about that "idiot proof" thing. 😉 Get this:

I purchased a bunch of systems for school from tcwo.com, probably about 16. Well, a couple of the other guys here and I were putting them together and testing them, and one of them doesn't work. It turns on for about 5 minutes, but then shuts itself off. So I pop open the case, and sure enough, the guy that had put this one together had installed the HSF unit *backwards*. He had actually put it on so that the heatsink was shifted way over to the right of the chip; it wasn't covering the entire CPU. Not only was the chip fried, but the metal on the heatsink that come into contact with the core of the chip and flaked some of it off. Needless to say we had to get another CPU.

Basic rule of thumb: nothing is idiot-proof!! 😉

By idiot-proof I was actually restating what ww.tcwo.com had said to me...they really liked the HSF (obviously since they offer a warranty above regular oem vendors) and said it had dramatically cut down on calls and complaints of people crushing or frying their chips...

How did he do that? Did the clip get shifted somehow? Did www.tcwo.com step up to the plate? Interested in knowing this.

"Basic rule of thumb: nothing is idiot-proof!!"

I guess there is always somebody, right?

What he did was to put the HSF on backwards so that the thermal tape was not over the core. I would draw you a picture here, but the forums are not conducive to drawing pictures, so take a look at this one I drew here. As you can see, the entire assembly was shifted over to the right of the processor since the HSF was on backwards. I don't know exactly how he did it; we were rushing to get these machines built so I guess he was just careless. Since it was our fault, I didn't even bother asking TCWO for a refund, I just bought another processor. It was only a Duron 750, so it only cost me $40.
