Farcry did look good but the enviroments looked just a bit plastic to me.

HL2 on the other hand looked fantastic in pretty much every way possible except there was a slight lack of lighting effects.

The games that astounded me the most were Doom 3 and F.E.A.R. I love the great lighting effects and usually the atmosphere in Doom 3 and F.E.A.R is just eye candy all round.
 
I don't know if FarCry had the best graphics ever, but they sure were the prettiest graphics I've ever seen. It's very rare that a game will cause me to stop and look at world just because it looks awesome. FarCry did that to me at least once per level.
 
unreal tournament is the best i've got (runs at 20 fps 🙂 ). for the time, need for speed hot pursuit 2 was really pretty.
