Just a FYI, this requires that you jailbreak your device... but holy cow if this isn't awesome!

Use the following extensions, which can be found in Cydia:

- SMS GV Extension (http://gvexts.appspot.com/sms/sms.html)
- Phone GV Extension (http://gvexts.appspot.com/phone/phone.html)

These are both $2.99/ea, but what it does is it allows you to use Google Voice SMS in the native Messaging app, and will place calls with you GV # using the native Phone app.

For SMS to work properly, you need either a mail account for it to watch, or install the Google Voice App Store app and it can use the push notifications.

All I have to say is this is so awesome. You also can then use the superb texting app, BiteSMS, if you want.

Nice, I'll have to check out the SMS one. My biggest problem with using Gvoice was that it didn't integrate into the phone at all and you had to use the separate program.

edit: Now that I read it, it doesn't seem to have enough control for what I need. It sounds great if all you use is GV for text, but if you use a mix it could cause issues. The "send" option is an all or nothing thing, which means you can set it so either all your sent texts are normal and through your carrier, or all are sent through GV. The problem is that I get texts from both, so if I have it set to carrier then when I respond to GV people they'll get a response from the wrong number. And of course the reverse is an issue as well. Good start, but for $3 it needs more control.

You're seriously going to sit here and admit you pirated software, and then point out the repo you got it from? You're a special kind of stupid boy...

Ah, yea that sucks. Sounds like you need something like how Mail works. A unified Inbox and when you reply you can choose the account it's sending from. I'm no Obj-C programmer, but seems like that's feasible to do.

I'm sure it's doable. If nothing else just a way to pick specific contacts to use GV vs. carrier (like they do with signatures), or just use whatever I'm replying to. If it was received w/ GV then it should send with GV. Seems like such an obvious thing to include, and there's multiple ways of solving the issue. They could even go the biteSMS route and set it up so when you tap send it'll use carrier, but if you HOLD send it'll send through the other service. I'll keep an eye on it as I'm sure they'll include it at some point. At least, I'd certainly hope so.

O rly?

I've been assuming whatever isn't on the apple store is free-game :)

It would be stupid to leave your iphone at default settings and assume it's not capable of anything better than what apple loads onto it.

No, what I'm saying is that there are many non appstore apps that you're supposed to pay for through the cydia store, and there's many repos out there that offer cracked versions. MyWi 4.0 is a premium app that you're supposed to pay for, if you didn't pay for it you pirated it plain and simple. Just because it's not on the app store doesn't give you the right to get out of paying for it. That'd be like downloading a game like Braid for free just because you can't get it at best buy. By your standards if it's not sold at one specific store then you don't have to pay for it, even though you're supposed to buy it elsewhere.

And yet here we are talking about an app with a main purpose of avoiding texting and other fees.

Good lord, my eyes almost fell out of their sockets they rolled so hard. I want to say something about the differences between utilizing a completely legal service vs. law breaking piracy, but you've already made your choice.

All I have to say now is... Dallas huh, what a surprise

I personally feel the 3G connection of the AT&T iPhone is too iffy for me to use it for voice. I've tried with Skype and most of the time the call will break up every 10-15 secs, so until the data service in my area is more reliable I'll stick with actual minutes.

That's not the point. You should pay for MyWi - its a good program, and one that helps keep Cydia running.
