i always was an old school dude because in those days everything was about feeling and graphic stuff was something like "we could try that but the story would suck then"

Every gen has been better than the last IMO. You have to be a bit of a jaded asshole not to recognize that. In terms of storytelling, graphics, audio, gameplay concepts....everything....today's games are incredible. If you cant find something you like on one of these three consoles then you're just not looking hard enough. If I had even a glimpse of what gaming would be in 2011 when I was a little boy playing my NES in 1985 it would have made my head explode.

That being said, I'll always have a soft spot for the SNES. It was an apex of a golden age that is somewhat lost. But I'd never give up what we have now if it meant I'd never touch a SNES again. It was great for its time, and many games still hold up very well, but whats possible nowadays just blows it away on every level.

Saying one "era" is the best is kind of naive and silly, without heavily tempering that with it just being your own personal preference.
I agree however...

From what I remember about the early consoles (before N64) is they had crap controllers that were easily broken. But everyone loved those games trying, taking turns, trying to beat each others scores.

I never really got into games till I broke my leg, bought an N64 and played the heck out of Rogue Squadron, Turok and Golden Eye. That was my first short lived era.

From then it's all PC and lots and lots of online play. Online gaming is probably 80% of what we think of gaming today. Today is the the Best Era of gaming imo.

Yes, the gamecube era was when the standard twin stick controller really made the most significant advancements. Halo controlled light years better than golden eye.

The NES and SNES had controllers that were built to withstand quite a beating. Mine still work perfectly 20-25 years later. I bet they'll stick work in another 50. It wasn't until they n64 that they started to get crappy with crusty analog sticks and sticky buttons. Even my wiimotes have had sticky buttons for years.

Nostalgia is one thing, and I may never experience the fun of some games I used to play, but that's because I was a young kid. The fact is gaming is better now than it ever was. Consoles are more powerful, games are better with better controls, graphics, story lines, development quality (sh*tloads of money thrown at some of them).

I grew up with the Atari 2600, then NES, then Genesis, other stuff in between, then the Playstation. However if I were to look back at the most fun I had, it would be in the arcade days playing Street Fighter II through Mortal Kombat III. That was a BLAST! It was just a bunch of regulars that would show up at Putt-Putt up until 3:00am and was like a big party. Fun as hell! The next best time would be the NES. Just a great times spending HOURS upon HOURS playing games like Contra, Super Mario Brothers and Mike Tyson's Punch Out! Great times! And fuck Ghosts 'n Goblins! Then followed up VERY closely (and quite honestly, I may rank this over the NES) the original Unreal Tournament days on the PC. Absolute BLAST! I guess that is why I got out of PC gaming. Games looked better, but nothing really grabbed my attention like UT, although UT 2004 was pretty fun.

Anyway, I'm sure everyone else had their own fond memories of games they played and would rank them their own way.

zelda windwaker was the best zelda game IMO.

That game was such crap I shut it off a few hours in and never touched it again. It got really old fast.

A Link to the Past and Ocarina of Time are vastly superior.

The SNES was the best to me. It has my favorite console game ever:

Super Metroid

PS1/N64/Saturn era was by far the best. The leap from 16 bit to 32bit and 2d to 3d was visually amazing, and the use of CD-ROM allowed for comparatively massive games and excellent audio. But it wasn't just the hardware.. The PS1 era gave birth to brand new exciting, original never seen before genres, like "Survival Horror" and "Tactical Espionage Action"
Besides all that i think they just had some of the most enjoyable games i've ever played.

Metal Gear Solid
Abe's Odyssey
Final Fantasy VII & IX
Resident Evil 1 & 2
Gran Turismo
Command and Conquer & Red Alert
Goldeneye
Twisted Metal 2
Soviet Strike
Bust a Groove/Parapa the Rapper
Soul Blade (or Tekken if you prefer)
Wipeout
Grand Theft Auto 1
Tomb Raider
Time Crisis & Point Blank
Zelda
Mario 64
Destruction Derby 2

I still have a soft spot for 8bit gaming like Sonic, Mario, Golden Axe, Double Dragon, Wonder Boy etc in all its 2D side scrolling glory.

16 bit was memorable for games like Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter II.

But ever since i've had the income to be able to have a computer with better hardware and graphics than current gen consoles, console gaming today has been rubbish to me. I only use my PS3 to play a couple of hours FIFA each year and a handful of exclusives like God of War collection.
I wouldn't waste my time or money playing anything on console that can be played on PC, especially FPS, which are far superior on PC. I cringe everytime i walk past someone playing COD or the like on a 50" 1080p LCD/plasma and see all the jaggies, low res textures and just all round roughness and jerkiness of the graphics. Give me a keyboard, mouse and CRT any day.
