I'd say the 700E. Most of the cB0's will hit 933 with good cooling (I like the Golden Orb) and a few extra volts. I sure like mine. :p

keep in mind that I know squat about p3's compared to alot of these guys, but my undertanding us that 700 and 800E's are the best. You want to buy want rated at 100mhz bus, then stick pc133 in it and overclock the fsb to 133+. That will make a 700 (7x100=700) become (7x133=931). Comon guys, Flame Me!

Can someone splain what cB0 is and stepping in general? Are all coppermines cB0?

cB0 is basically a newer version of the PIII core, meant to support SMP (right guys). Obviously Intel also changed something allowing for a marked improvement in overclocking. BTW 800e is not that great for overclocking, it'll do about the same as a 700e (probably a limitation of the PIII core hitting higher clock speeds).

The "B" in 800EB denotes the CPU is designed to run on a 133 Mhz FSB; typically you would prefer to start an overclocking odyssey with a 100Mhz FSB.

"All" cB0 Coppermines share a ceiling somewhere around the 1 Ghz level (plus or minus 100Mhz). To hit 933 Mhz with an 800EB you will need a FSB of 155 Mhz. A 700E, with it's multiplier of 7, will do it at 133Mhz, keeping memory, AGP & PCI in spec on an 815.

There is no best for P3 OC, as long as it's in the range of 500E-700E, and cB0/cC0 stepping, it's good stuff. They all 133MHz bus with high percentages, anywhere above 133MHz varies from chip to chip.

If you run a 700 on a VIA motherboard, you can set your memory to -33MHz, leaving it at 100MHz while the chip runs at 133. I haven't tried my Samsung -GH at 133, but I just bumped up my chip to test it at 133 and left the memory lower to remove it from potential problems (my cB0 700 is at 933MHz at default voltage -- no problems whatsoever in stability).

you really want to stay away from the coppermine with B in the name since overclocking is hard for those because of higher bus. I would definitely say coppermine 700, just check out my sig!

Ah see, I was asking because while checking out Onvia's price's, they didnt guarentee the stepping...or somethin

will the P3 600E flipchip/slocket do well on a P2B-F? Will the 600E run on the 8x multiplier @ 800? I'm getting kinda cheap:) I'd like to get some more use outta this Asus board.

well, nothign much to gaurantee anymore since cA2 stepping 700s are not out anymore and are not being manufactured, all out should be cB0

How about a P3 600E that was bought about 3 months ago? What is the chance of it being a cB0?

You gotta remember your AGP will be way outta spec if you overclock any Coppermines on that board.

Well, you know what I'm thinking he ought to do, but I ain't gonna say it...

Intel Celeron 566Mhz, Retail Box New Version $98.00
http://www.augustustech.com/Products/cpu.asp

Oh I couldn't help it. Grab a Retail so you don't end up with a picked over OEM. The retail HS/fan is more than adequate to cool it at 850MHz too.

Although another $90 for a real 700E with an additional 128K of L2 ain't that bad an option either. We are now in an era of unprecedented low hardware prices ... :D

Best Coppermine for overclocking is not a PIII, it's a Celeron II. :D

Why? Because ALL Celeron IIs are cB0.

Who's say Eug? Where did you get the info dude? I want to see the list of them. Just curious, that's all.
Thanks.

eug: do you mean all celeron II's can SMP? Cuz frankly i've heard otherwise. God i hope you're right though.

In that case Eug, how come most of the Celeron 2 do not go as high as the P3? Most do not reach the 1Ghz.

I have both P3 700E FCPGA and Celery 566.

P3 700E made it to 1015Mhz super stable (on BE6-2)
Celery 566 made it to 875Mhz super stable (on BX6-2)

I'd say both chip performed really well. I believe my celery could go higher on a better mobo.

either CPU is good choice. It's up to your budget really.

"In that case Eug, how come most of the Celeron 2 do not go as high as the P3?"

Well, most of the chips out there are 533A or 566.

I've gotten my 533A to 960 MHz. It did pretty well at an 80% overclock, even if it did hang once after 2 days of FULL load 24/7, with air cooling.

I have not yet seen posted here a 600E or 700E with an 80% overclock with equal stability. (That would be 1080 and 1260 MHz respectively.)
