I think my sister has that Nokia (looks kinda like a phaser from orignal star trek but smaller). I'm thinking of the Eriksen (sp?) T28Z world phone. One of my buddies has one and it is sweet :D

Cheers,

I personally would choose a service first, then choose the best phone for that service.

I have the Nokia 6210. It's not too small and not too big. Just perfect and has some nice featuers. It's the best Cell Phone @ the moment, IMO.

Just a hint, if you're in LA, avoid PacBell/Cingular wireless... Crappy service coverage, even in the city.

If you use Pacbell/Cingular or any GSM 1900 provider,
don't be surprised that you get poor reception in urban city area, high density area, inside building, etc,
this is the feature of cheaper cost high freq. GSM.

Airtouch (CDMA 800 + Analog dual mode) is better in theory.

Mikewarrior2, for price performance, what do you think of Nextel ? I am also in the LA area. The canyons and hills are tough for Nextel, but otherwise it seems decent. What say ?

if u want the best phone without internet (WAP) features, get the 8850

i mean, who's going to check the weather and horoscopes on the phone anyway?

nokia 8850 is the best there is

or the sony z5 that's great as well

I have an Ericcson T28, love it.
Only drawback is the short battery time, but thats no problem to me since I can just load it at night.

Consider the Sprint Touchpoint 2200. Many features including voice dialing and speakerphone. Hard to beat Sprint, 1500 minutes with nationwide long distance for $49 per month.:D

I have a Touchpoint 1100 with SprintPCS and I love it but reception's not very good in buildings. I don't think this is a phone issue more than it is a GSM-1900 issue

any nokia will do; they're all really reliable and highly customizable (cell phone tweaking, anyone?) I've got the 88 series [the tiny one] and it's much better than I thought it could possibly be. Better than the two startacs, an ericson, and a lesser nokia I've gone through.

What's the 8890? Is it the same as the 8290? I have the 8260, it's a little bigger than the 8290 and lacks infared beaming. It's the best phone IMHO. A really small size, no antenna, plus all the standard Nokia features.

KingOfComputer,

Airtouch is now Verizon. I currently switched(i knew lots of people on airtouch/verizon, getting much better service than my pac-bell phone).

The main reason I switched is because I do a lot of hiking, and I need the coverage in the canyons(which i get with Verizon) when i'm leading hiking groups.

Jerry,

I only know one person with Nextel, but from what i've seen, its great coverage within the city. Definately better than hte pac-bell stuff.

Pacbell services sucks because they have an all digital service. So once your out of that "digital" service area, the phone doesn't switch to analog and just drops your call. Also they have mass recruited people with huge phone rebates and such to the point where their lines are also full. Expect to get system busy messages when calling out.

I have the Nokia 8890. Beautiful phone which will likely turn heads :). However if you break it, good luck on warranty service. The 8000 series are definetely less durable then the 6000 series (I dropped my 6190 on asphalt soo many times. It still has the battle scars :p). Nokia currently has a national shortage of Nokia 8000 series phones for warranty replacement :(

Ah, the good old "system busy" message with my old pac-bell service. I am soooo happy I got rid of it. :D. Its just like PacBell over-advertising their DSL.

Mike, I haven't had a problem with Cingular at all. I have the Nokia 8290 and it's been a really good phone, got it for free too. I was even talking as I drove down Beverly Glen in the canyon and got 3 bars of reception. I go to UCLA and Verizon and Sprint both have problems with reception on campus. Sprint has 0 pretty much everywhere.

I drive around for my job, I do computer consulting, and I drive all over LA and I haven't found a dead spot yet. I've been in Downtown a few time and it's been okay there too. The Valley, the westside, the Southbay, I've had coverage all over.

late.

I loved the 8890. I used it on PacBell here in San Fran. Had no problems with it.

Had to switch to a 8290 which I feel gets worse reception than the 8890 and lacks the panache. I hear the s40 is supposed to be $350-400. Not 100% certain though.

I've been really happy with my Motorola Timeport P8167 and Sprint service in San Diego. I like to go down to Mexico a lot, and I get Sprint service about 10 miles into Mexico, then roam on the PCS and analog networks further south. Battery life is great, almost at good as my Nokia 6190. The features of the phone are useful and fairly customizable and the phone is small and looks pretty good too.

I just replaced my Nokia 5190 with an 8290. I really wanted the 8890, but the price was just way too steep for me. I just really wanted a small phone that I could carry in my pocket without noticing it, and this 8290 fits the bill perfectly.
