The best anti-spyware, anti-virus app

There are many anti-spyware and anti-virus applications out there. I'm using Norton Anti Virus 2004. I think it's pretty good, but i've heared some people saying that some free anti-virus app's are better. Is this true?
Also, i'm looking for a good anti-spyware app. There are loads of them out there. I would like to know which one is the best.
 
Its hard to get the AT community or any large group of people for that matter to agree on a subject like this. Some people prefer one app over another for whatever reason. The best one is the one that works best for you and that you fell comfortable using.
 
I used Norton 2003 and I really didn't like it at all. I quickly uninstalled and got the AVG free antivirus and that wasn't too bad, but the AV program I really like is panda antivirus. Works quite well. Also, Lavasoft just released an updated spyware scanner Ad-aware SE. If I were you I'd get 2-3 different spyware scanners and run them all once or twice a week keeping them updated.
