The best 6800GT cooler?

Mrvile

Lifer
I have a BFG 6800GT OC with the beefy looking dual-fan heat sink, only problem is that it's loud as f and offers no better cooling, not to mention costing me 30 more bucks. Well anyway, I was wondering what some nice 6800 coolers are, I know theres the NVSilencer5 but what are some other viable options?

I dont' know of any. I got the NV5... its VERY quiet. very satisfying, you cannot hear it at all.

Oook 🙂

Another question, since the NV5 doesn't have any ram heatsinks, should I just keep the ones that came with the card (the ones located near the back end of the card, right?)? I was also looking at a review of the card and when they took the heatsink off there were a bunch of little squares (lack of a better word), maybe about 6 of them and about 1x1cm, surrounding the main chipset. What are these and will the NV5 cover them?

Thanks! Sorry I'm a little lost when it comes to video card structure 😛

Those squares (8 of them) are the RAM, and yes it will cover them. I used Arctic Silver on the core and the included thermal paste for the RAM when I installed my NV5 Silencer. I know the description of the NV5 says that it doesn't include the RAM, but it does.

The reason for using Arctic Silver on the core and not the RAM is because it is very difficult to get the thermal compound on the RAM without it touching the pins that connect the RAM to the PCB and Arctic Silver it slightly conductive, but the white paste isn't.

Ok thanks, Nitro, that's nice to know but then again, what are those little things near the back of the card? They're like little black ridged heatsink-shaped plastic things I assumed at first were the ram, but now I don't know what they are.

Are you talking about the black, slim heatsink at the bottom of the card in this picture? That is a heatsink, but I don't know what exactly it is cooling. If you get an NV5, it will fit over that. Just leave it alone.

You can see the NV5 installed here...

There is a side shot in the middle of the page, see how the NV5 fits nicely over that little heatsink?

that is exactly the same as mine (eVGA) and you can see, the NV5 does cover the RAM.

🙂

Thanks nitro for those links! The NV5 is a lot bigger than I thought (I was expecting relatively the same size as the stock X800 fans). And yeah the NV5 does nicely cover the rams, I'm definately gonna get me one once I get the 30 bucks to (I'm poor). Also the PCI door of the slot above it should be left open to exhaust air right?

Right, you'll want to remove that backplate and use the slotted one they give you with the Silencer. BTW, that slim heatsink is therer to cool the voltage regulation components.
