What is the best 17 inch lcd monitor money can get? Money isn't an issue but it would be good if it was in 600 dollar price range at most. I will be playing games on this monitor so it needs a fast response time. Tell me some suggestions guys.

The Samsung 173P is absolutely stunning and will be about $600. There is very little ghosting considering its response time of 20 ms. I don't think this is a problem.

Samsung 172X. BEST 17" LCD money can buy. 12ms response, 500:1 contrast ratio and gorgeous looks. I recently put my BenQ FP737s on sale with 16ms response time, 500:1 just so I can get one of these Samsungs. Hopefully I'll have one of those 12ms reponse time babies by the end of the month.

If you gots the cash, get it. I find even at 16ms there is a small amount of trailing which I didn't quite like. Not to mention BenQ's tedius quality with a high frequency noise which doens't go away unless I unplug it.

Get the Scepter Komodo IV 19"... It's the best lcd I've ever seen and its only $500 for 19". The Samsung is very nice too however (really nice enclosure too).

From the looks of it, the Samsung Syncmaster 172X seems to be the nicest 17 inch monitor. It has a ultra fast 12ms response time. Not to say the killer, streamlined look. This definetely seems to be the leading canidate in my book.

Do any of you guys at anand have one of these babies? Tell me what you think of it.

Pretty much crap. Did you read any reviews or search any tech hardware forums before declaring this your "leading candidate" or did you just go off specs and looks? But, whatever, that's just my opinion...order from a place with a good return policy and give us your impressions when you get it...maybe they'll differ form mine.

Wow, rather harsh comments on a monitor that's getting raving reviews. I don't want to show you up, but what was wrong with it? What issues were you having with it?
Thanks.

 Yup heard it was crap definity for the price.

OP I really don't understand buying a 17". I find the native res of 1280x1024 much too small on that size of a screen...my sugesstion is the 19" AG neovo E-19A. Has crsytal clear graphics and exacting text due to the propritary optical filter. Try one, they should have it at CompUSA in in your area. Nothing comes close IMO and I have 3 other LCD's including the Samsung 191T. The reviews all give 5 stars if you google for em.

Sorry, I know this isn't a 17" screen, but for around $700 you can get a 21" Dell 2001FP. That's only 100 bucks more than you were willing to spend, plus you'll get 1600X1200, and much much more screen size. The reviews on its gaming performance were excellent. Just make sure you have a good videocard to push 1600x1200.

I guess you can see how these monitor recommendation threads go by now;) Everyone has a different opinion what they like:)

The only way to buy a monitor, speakers, mouse or keyboard is B&M IMO. The look and feel and interaction are just too much to for one product to be the be all end all internet order. And invaribly you will not like what others like.

I thought the dell was terrible. Has a grainey like sorta double layer screen that light from the display reflected sparkly and halo like, a backdoor effect up top and strange alternating lines on light backgrounds... See what I mean:)

Im getting postive reviews of the samsung 172x from many sources, including extremeoverclockers, cnet, pcstats, tweaknews just to name a few. I don't see what possibly can be that terribly wrong with the monitor.

From the reviews, i hear that there is a slight problem with ghosting. Some reviews saw it was non-existant but others say that a slight amount does appear when watching dvd movies. Not much of a concern to me considering i rarely watch dvds on my computer (thats what a dvd player with a tv is for)
I probably do more surfing and games than anything else.

I also hear some complaints that it isn't as adjustiable as the 173P, which is beyond my budget. Whatever is nice on the eyes and is ez to work with is fine, i don't need a million adjustments to color, contrast, etc.

The Dell 2001FP looks nice and all, but 21 inches is way too big for me. I have a small amount of area to work in , and 21 inches is an overkill.

Check Text for a negative review. My recommendation for the 173P is based on having and using one, not on specs or other recommendations.

How about the Viewsonic VP171B or NEC 1760NX? :) Both have gotten excellent reviews, and come with 16ms timings.

I don't know if this is the best 17" LCD monitor, but it's the one I like the most (aside from the Dell 2001FP, that is ;)) - NEC MultiSync LCD1765 17" LCD monitor. Downside: analog input only. Upside: brightest, most beautiful screen out of all the screens on the aisle in every store I've been to.

Make sure to go look at the one you choose in person...
