When I was a kid, my older brother had a lot of their albums, and I liked a lot of their music but forgot about them over time. I saw Love at the Mirage this Christmas, and I think I might be a Beatles fan. My wife bought the Love "soundtrack", but I think I might want to get some of their original albums.

What would be the best album to start with?

I disagree w.r.t the White Album.

For one of their originally released albums, I'd say pick up Revolver.

Would those be some of their later albums? Because I really like the weird drug-inspired stuff from their later years.

One is a collection of all their #1 hits. Ranging in time from early to late Beatles.
The White Album is late, I believe it is the third or second to last official album. Maybe someone can clarify for me.

They really cannot do anything with them at the moment. It took forever just have digital copies of their music. Too much red tape.

Not if we're lucky. It may just be me, but the one of the last things I want is a Beatles Album that has been ruined by modern mastering techniques.

Well hopefully they'd be done properly, without the massive compression and noise reduction artifacts. Perhaps I'm being too optimistic. :(

I can't recommend Sgt Pepper for someone just getting into/back into the Beatles, it's a bit disjointed (same reasoning for putting the White Album further down the list).

I'm surprised that most of you aren't even considering One in your lists. Yes, its not an original album, but it showcases in chronological order the best of the Beatles. For someone not familiar with most of their work, this is probably a perfect starting block.

(edit for stupid spelling)

My parents had the red and blue greatest hits collections when I was a kid, so that was all I heard for a long time. I think there's value in listening to the original albums as a single piece.

I just checked out the track listing for One, and I definitely can't recommend it to someone looking to explore the Beatles' music.

Also, there are remixed editions of their albums that already exist.. I forget the exact name of the fellow but I want to say it has Dr. in the title. They sound much better than the originals.

edit: His name is Dr. Ebbett.

Bootlegs only? I'll have to see if I can dig them up.

Bingo.

mmhmm, excellent suggestions. I personally taking a liking to Yellow Submarine as well, as a few of the tracks, including the title track, are songs I really enjoy. Basically, if it came from their drug era, I probably love it. :)

well, first, their Capitol album releases are being remastered in stereo (and quite often, the tracks are making their stereo debut on the cd sets).

Capitol Vol 1
Capitol Vol 2

I haven't had a chance to listen to Vol 2 yet, but Vol 1, while not necessarily my favorite music from The Beatles, definitely has great audio sound and isn't really tampered with too much except bringing stereo play to the songs. They sound like what I imagine a good CD version of their albums would sound like, not necessarily the messy mastering that is common in the music industry today.

Now, they just need new CDs of all their Apple releases. Their are Apple anthologies, but I am not sure if they are 'modern masters', or just re-released audio (not even sure if they are mono or stereo).

I really enjoy the One album, as it has a lot of my favorite tracks, but is missing some still.
