Sweet, you finished it man! Looks great...just be careful about dust and small objects falling down the ports. Might want to consider the port grills PE sells, or add a level of MDF like some designs use.

But man, that's AWESOME! What did you end up tuning it to? Piss off the neighbors yet?

It's a Adire Aligned reference enclosure, tuned to 15.4 hz.

No amp yet, but that should be here shortly.

Luckily my neighbors are my age, so they'll probably ask to join in.

Holy crap, that thing is huge! :Q 15Hz? Damn...talk about gut-busting. :D The opening scene in SW Episode II where the ship lands should be a good first thing to watch. :D

That tube is huge...is that a 15" sub in there? Got any pics or links to the plans? The amp...is it a car stereo amp? How are you powering it?

Are you guys still having trouble with the pictures? For some reason they got hosed when I initially posted them, but I fixed them & they seem to work...

Ladies Man

I am building a second one, but I hope to sell it to recoup some of my costs. Many of the materials had to be purchased in quantities sufficient to build two, thus artificially inflating my materials cost.

So in a couple weeks there should be an identical sub for sale in the Portland, OR area.

It's a 24" diameter Sonotube, the outer endcaps are 27" in diameter. The entire thing stands about 38 or 39 inches. It is a 15" Adire Tempest driver, & will be powered by an external pro amp (QSC RMX850). The driver's voice coils are wired in parallel (resulting 4 ohm load) and I will run the amp in bridged mono mode providing 860W for the sub.

The details of the design are my own, the enclosure volume/porting is Adire reference design, the basic idea of the Sonosub has been done dozens of times by people over at hometheaterforum. I do have CAD drawings of each piece, if anybody wants them I'd be more than happy to provide them.

I'd be interested in the plans, parts, etc. PM or email me, please. :) Got a link for the amp? I'm curious about that...

And in other news...

Rescue workers rushed to the city of Beaverton, Oregon, are facing incredible odds, and the chances of finding any more survivors among the rubble are growing slim. As we have reported in an earlier newscast, Beaverton was completely levelled in a yet unidentified disaster, which was likened to an earthquake by the few surviving locals that were far enough to escape its enormous destructive power. While at the moment we cannot provide you with any more details as to the nature of disaster, a preliminary survey has, surpisingly, accurately pinpointed the epicenter of the quake. The shockwave seems to have originated at the home of a Beaverton resident whose identity is currently withheld by law enforcement agencies.

Total cost for each sub (unpowered) is around $400. That includes the driver, tube, wood, port kits, & all miscellaneous components. I had to buy 12' of Sonotube ($105), only ~3' of which got used for each sub. I'll have $50 worth of Sonotube left over. If you were to build just one the cost would be slightly higher, maybe $500.

You can spend anywhere from $100+ on an amp. The drivers are rated at up to 750W, but they can easily be driven with only 250W or even less. I spent $280 on ebay for a used RMX860 with a SKB case because I want to migrate to pro equipment. A simple 250W plate amp will power a Tempest fine, though you would need to build an external enclosure for it or build it into the tube wall (not recommended). My QSC will power both subs if I end up stuck with both (I say stuck like that's a bad thing...).

Labor is the truly expensive part, this took me almost a month to build @ several weekday evenings + a large portion of weekend time. I always had at least two people working on it (me & my brother) and frequently a third.

Each endcap is 5+ layers, two of which are 1" MDF. The bottom endcap is 3" thick, & each cap weighs probably 40 lbs on their own. Each received two layers of automotive primer, 4 layers of silver paint, & four layers of clearcoat.

More pictures

When I get home tonight I'll zip up the CAD files & upload the rest of my pictures, I have quite a few more that I haven't put up yet.

Actually that was out at my parents house (I have nowhere I could do that kind of thing), the girls are my cousins. Oh, and they're 8 years old.
