sensitive issue for me because I'm on the young side and would consider myself to be a lot more "together" than my peers, regardless of age

Why not be proud of your age then? "I'm as smart as you AND I have x number of years more of life left than you do!" I'd rather be young and mature than old and immature. (I think most people would)
