What nVidia card is pretty much equal in performance to the standard ATi Radeon 9600?

Look at how good the GF4 ti4200 is in the non-AA/AF benches - Anandtech Budget Cards .
It certainly beats the 9600SE cripple-card into a quivering pulp, and beats the 5600 Ultra in some benches.

well if we take to that account then a lot of cards are like that...but the difference is when you crank up AA/AF the g4 takes a nosedive whereas the 9600pro still delivers ^_^

It depends on the benchmark, but somewhere in the Ti4200, Ti4400, FX 5600 range for most of today's games. It's just clocked too low. The 9600 Pro and XT perform much, much better.

My 9600 was slower than the 8500 it replaced until I overclocked it from 325/400 to 425/540, then it finally put out some decent performance. I still wasn't happy though, so I have a 9800 Pro on the way.

Yes, but he's asking about the non-pro. The 9600pro is better, but it's more expensive than the ti4200.

Like the others have said, the 4200, the 5600, or the 5700, depending on the application.
