<< A 0.13-micron design rule processor that will be the successsor to AMD's Athlon family, code-named Barton, will be introduced in the second half of 2002, according to AMD officials. >>

I think as a couple of other people have already pointed out, we are just talking codenames here.
It should also be mentioned this is not always a good thing, for instance when the Spitfire codename got renamed to the Duron production name. Somebody at AMD must have been smoking wacky backy ;)

<< At least the name "Duron" I thought was good from the start... >>

It is interesting to note that in the UK, "Duron" was copyrighted before AMD started using it, and is the name of material used in some condoms. Maybe they worked some deal out though, since I haven't heard any flack over it.

Regardless I hope they come up with something that flows better off the tongue than "Athalon". :p

<< Yah but Barton? OMG! That's a gay name! (no offense to anyone named Barton)... >>

I knew a guy years ago named Matt Barton who was in fact, homosexual. Very strange indeed.

Thank God that's only the codename!!! You almost had me vomit for a second NFS4...

Athlon is actually a pretty nice name, I don't understand people who were bashing it when it came out... But Barton??? That's just a freaking joke!!!

OTOH, it might be a good sign since usually AMD has cool codenames (like Spitfire, Thunderbird) but ends up deceiving us when they come out with the official name. I mean, how could they come up with anything worse than Barton?

HAHAHA well at least Athlon sounds techish, Barton sounds like a guy in full knights armor swinging a mace at a medevial times show!

and Duron should have stuck with its code name as it sounded much better!

You're all tripping over a code name? I can remember a time when cpus lacked funky, marketing-inspired names. ZX-80, 8086, 6502, etc. Back in those days no one ever said, "Gee, what the hell was Intel thinking with '80486'?! That's just dumb!". :)

I thought AMD was using horse names eg. Mustang, Thoroughbread, Clawhammer(what)... Maybe they should run a contest for a name. How about Ntelasskicher to go with the german manufacturing site...?

Athlon still sounds stupid to me, at least Duron has that has star trekkie klingon type ring to it. Barton sounds weird too, Buffy sounds good though :D

hahaha @ Muerto..

Hey.. Athlon is a good name.. it makes me think of the parthanon for some reason.. power and wisdom..

or something.. and duron is a good name.. "durable"?? ??

<edit> but yeah... barton sounds pretty lame.. maybe it could pass for a new element in the periodic table?? Maybe the missing one? Is there a missing one? </edit>

I am Greek and Athlon means doing something incredible (like the things Hercules did) - I can't remember the english word :)and maybe it's just the same in Greek and English , Athlon-
In Greek it's called "¢èëïò" ***@#$%^& you cannot see the word unless you have greek coding:(***and it's spelled Athlos. Barton seems stupid but it's just a codename. Anyway Athlon is much better either as a codename or as a final.

These guys need some basic advertising help. I mean what'd be wrong with calling it the "super-dooper" (with "turbocharger" as an add on obviously)
