I didn't know you could partially plant or defuse MCOMs. I thought it had to be done all at once or not at all. Maybe that explains why some people can run up and immediately arm one.

hes talking about the progress bar you see when you're arming disarming, and the argument is that you should get points for partial arms/disarms - I'd suggest 10 points for every 10%.

This way you would have players encouraged to try and help disarm even if someone is already doing it, so that in case that player is killed, theres a good chance someone else is disarming.

The problem I have with this is that sometimes you get too many players disarming as is and not enough players focused on other things like making sure the area is actually cleared of the enemies at did the actual arming. With more players clamoring over the MCOM to try and disarm for the extra points, we would see an increase of incidents where a surviving attacker(s) comes in and slaughters everyone on the point relatively uncontested.

New Battlefield Blog Post: Pre-Gamescom ends with a Bang!

* BY: zh1nt0
* POSTED : Aug 15, 2010, 03:45PM

So, Ladies and Gentlemen! It’s that time of year again where everyone is getting ready for one of the biggest gaming conventions ever. I feel honored and very proud to represent DICE and Battlefield at this years Gamescom 2010.

As the preparations have been set and the ball is in motion, it’s safe to say we are going to have something great for people this year, and if you can't make it, I'll make sure you don't miss out by uploding videos on youtube, blogging and also twittering about the latest on Gamescom!

As the Community Manager, it is my job to manage the Community and receive feedback for the Battlefieldseries. That is still only half of what I do. My role at DICE goes hand in hand with my ambitions as a gamer and a key figure in Community Communications. That is to evolve the Community. Make it a bigger place and also make it the best Community out there. I have already seen what the Battlefield Community is capable of and I know we are on our way to something really great.

In order to manage the very large BF Community with millions of fans and players, one must engage all parties and hear their voices. Sometimes it can be tricky to actually listen to everyone at once, that is why I have been browsing around quite a lot and stumbled upon one site that caught my attention very fast.

Girlgamer. This site is brilliant and also points out the very essence of that gaming is in no way gender-related. That is why I am pushing this fact at Gamescom and everywhere I go, I will keep pushing it until it is acknowledged. Female gamers should never feel left out since they are as natural and important to the gaming community as the other groups such as competitive players and/or casual players. So make your voices heard Ladies! Call the shots and defeat stereotypes!

If you’re going to Gamescom, make sure to meet up with me and have a few words and give me your ideas.

And to end this message with a bang, I give you a really awesome video made by our very own Forum member R3CLAIMED.

New Battlefield Blog Post: The Onslaught Continues, #1: What is Onslaught Mode?

* BY: H Brun
* POSTED : Aug 16, 2010, 12:45

Onslaught_5F00_Nelson_5F00_Bay_5F00_1.png

First off, thanks to all of you for giving me such a warm welcome into the community. I have already had a chance to play Bad Company 2 with a few new friends this weekend, which was good fun. Next time, I will make sure to find my headset for maximum teamplay.

Today, I will begin an in-depth look at our DLC Onslaught Mode (for X360 and PS3). This first part in my new blog series will cover the basics of this new game mode.

So what is Onslaught? Here is the trick: it can be different things for different people. It tasks 1-4 of you to brave forwards and conquer a number of bases (much like in Conquest Mode) on four maps. Once you have taken all bases on a map, your time will be posted to the Onslaught specific leaderboards.

The enemies are A.I. controlled, and the difficulty can be set to Easy. This means that Onslaught Mode can be a relatively stress-free (and I use the term "stress-free" rather loosely) way of learning the ropes. If you or any of your friends are newcomers to the game or the genre, teaming up in Onslaught Mode is a good way of experimenting with the different classes and their special abilities, easing into the frantic multiplayer mode.

For the experienced players, the challenge lies in clearing the maps as quickly as possible. Also, specific achievements/trophies for clearing the maps on Hardcore difficulty means there is a sweet reason to accept this very tough challenge.

In the days to come, I will give you specific tips on each of the four Onslaught maps. Stay tuned. In the meantime, remember to keep your squad tight.

Fridens liljor,
Tommy "H Brun"

P.S. Almost forgot to link to a nice piece on Onslaught Mode by Mitch Dyer over on Bitsmob. Excellent stuff.

P.P.S. Onslaught Q+A below.

Q: Do I level up?
A: No. It would be too easy to boost your stats playing Onslaught Mode on Easy.

Q: How many players is it for?
A: 1-4. You will probably not have much luck playing it solo, though (challenge accepted, anyone?).

Q: How difficult is it?
A: There are four difficulties ranging from Easy to Hardcore. Easy is pretty relaxed, considering an entire army is out to get you. Hardcore setting is only recommended for four seasoned veterans.

So my first game last night, I jump on a server playing Rush on Isla Inocentes (the one where the first base is on an island), on the attacking team.
The squad I'm on seems to be happy peeking over hilltops sniping at the enemy. Half our tickets are gone. Luckily the other team seems content to shoot from the back of their base, and is not pressing the defense forward.

How am I going to get across the water alive? Whip out the smoke! With an ammo crate at your feet, you can issue an almost endless stream of smoke grenades. Bam Bam Bam, lay down a smoke screen along the front of the island...run across the water, squatting below A. Another ammo crate..pop out to lay some smoke in front of you, then up the hill to A, and crouch behind a cement block there, feeling very vulnerable. Lay down ammo, one smoke to the left towards B, then one on the far side of A. Arm crate A, then wait for the onslaught...which never really comes. Someone else had armed crate B right after. I think I killed two guys waiting for A to blow.
After that tried to create havok over at B, but they were able to disarm it at the last moment. Lay down some smoke, then move over in front of B. I can't remember if I armed B, but I definately remember defending it (and living) at very close quarters in a smoky haze until it blew.

At this point I felt like General effin Patton! I had only been there a few minutes and led the charge to capture the island. I'm pretty sure I typed "Your Welcome" in to Team chat (I'm sure nobody noticed :) ).

The match continued on in a similar manner, except now our team was rolling. I smoked the second base from afar to try to deter the snipers there, and also cover my own approach on the ground. I did squat on the second set of objectives except provide cover, and lob a frag grenade or two in to B while it was armed. They fell quickly.

More smoke covered our advance up the hill towards the final set of MComs. The Hind took off and decided to shell our base from the rear. With a little smoke cover I quickly made it over the hill and down to the cement wall in front of their final base, on the right. I put a crate down and camped behind the wall, firing through an opening trying to put a wall of smoke around A and our position, and providing a spawn point for our squad, which was pressing the attack. Smoking the guard towers was fun. I died a few times, but was revived by medics. Eventually I decided to move up to A and squatted right next to it, successfully defending it until it blew! Then I moved over to B, smoking the area over the wall near the Hind, and shooting at the few stragglers that approached. It went down easy.

Wow, I really felt like I was in the thick of it the whole way, like I lead the way to victory. Up comes the end game screens, click on the Scoreboard. There's my name way up at the ...bottom. Last on my team. :)

Anybody got a light?

Yep the Smokers never get any points. i think that's why nobody uses it. Too bad there can't be a system for getting points on smoke grenades

You may not have gotten the glory, but let's just say, I would rather have been playing with you than against you last night!

Take solace in your bottom of the charts finish. I've been spending a lot of time being the leading scorer on losing teams lately. Not all that rewarding. Can I bum a smoke?

Yeah, that was later in the evening. I joined on you from the friends list, and ended up on the opposite team, but on a squad with Demo24 (who you probably joined on)...

I had a blistering first few minutes fighting with him where I got like three mine kills on tanks, and actually knifed someone in a frontal attack (which is rare for me), then I got disconnected from EA :(

Luckily, I was able to re-join and actually ended up on the same squad, but the end score did not reflect those first few hot minutes.

I had two or three disconnections from EA last night. Seemed to be just me, though. Hope it's not a trend.

More often that not it seems when you join on a friend, you end up on the opposite team. You have to watch throughout the round an look for opportunities to team switch to play together.

Well I'm a firm believer in smoke grenade as well. And so was my squad today. Managed to get all but the last M-COM on isla innocentes through a combo of smoke and timely mortar strikes.

Last M-COM I ran up through a cloudy haze of smoke planted of it. Laid 2 more smokes down. First defender comes up I waste him with my M416, reload kill another defender with my 416, then another pops up I waste him with my MP-443, steal his M-60, kill two more defenders as I notice my squad mates die next to me...we've only got 5 reinforcements left! Shit! I hear footsteps behind me, whip around knife a guy in the face, only to have his teammate shotgun me from behind...I die...he defuses and then our last reinforcement ran out...oh the adrenaline was pumping....a hard fought effort! So close yet so far.

Agreed! I wish they would further incentivize it but I have no idea how a point system would be implemented for smoke.

zh1nt0's blog posting about GamesCon and a "big bang" was a surprise to me, because I had heard they weren't doing anything special there. Apparently his enthusiasm just got the best of him. He's new at this, you'll have to forgive his youthful exhuberance...

I had a crash to desktop last night right as a round was ending (and I was going to get the Ace pin too!). Did you just have a server disconnect, landing you back in the game menu?

Was good playing with you guys last night! Although I despise rush maps as of late.

You are a master assault sniper, by the way. I have no idea how you can wield that M95 at 5-foot range in tight quarters. Any tips you care to share?

Yeah, I landed back in the game. Said I lost connection with EA. I had to re-login to EA to proceed.

I'm guessing red dot sight...

Yes, I red dot sight the m95. At a reasonably close range it is 1 shot kill no matter where you place it. However at any sort of distance more than like 30ft its very hard to headshot them for a kill. I then couple it with the mp443 because it has many rounds and a high fire rate. It can be rather difficult to use, and really it works best on Panama and some other conquest maps. Basically all I use on Panama though. If you try it, it takes some time to get the timing down. I typically scope and pull off the shot as quickly as possible after I scope. Sometimes at the sametime. If in close quarters often best once you fire that one shot to switch to pistol until safe to reload again.

This is where I got the idea to do it from:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wdgviKG8N-w

Only thing I haven't done with an m95 is snipe a pilot. Done it plenty with the m24, just can't seem to do it with a m95. I did destroy a heli with one bullet today, was kinda fun. And I finally got my m95 plat star! At least I got that on a 214 marksman kill :)

New Battlefield Blog Post: The Onslaught Continues, #2: Pushing through Isla Inocentes

* BY: H Brun
* POSTED : Aug 16, 2010, 05:19PM

In our new series of strategy tips for Onslaught, the first map I will take you through is beautiful Isla Inocentes. No time like the present, so here we go!

Starting vehicles:
Starting out at your base, you will have immediate access to 1 UH-60 transport helicopter, 2 quad bikes and 2 patrol boats.

Recommended squad:
Minimum 1 engineer, as this map has both an enemy chopper and enemy tank that need to be taken down. Medics are always essential, since if everybody dies, it is game over.

Onslaught_5F00_Isla_5F00_4_2D00_550.png

On our way to base A. So far, so good.

Base A
About 230 metres away, accessible both by land and air, lies the first enemy base that you have to conquer. If you go by boat, you will meet pretty heavy resistance from a mounted machinegun and a mounted grenade launcher. Suggested approach: load up the UH-60 transport helicopter with one pilot and one passenger manning the minigun. Approach the beach in front of the base and hover sideways to let your minigunner make the process short with any immediate resistance in the area. Let the other players join up, either by boat on the beach, or by quad bikes along the road, effectively flanking the enemies.

Once you approach the base flag, an enemy Hind helicopter will appear and make life miserable. An engineer will be able to take it down with an RPG, but it is very hard to hit a moving target. If anyone in your squad has the tracer dart gun, using it on the chopper will make the engineer's rocket guided, which makes it much easier to dispose of the Hind. The very easiest approach, though, is probably to stay in the transport chopper and let your minigunner take care of it (if your helicopter is destroyed, it will respawn at your base after a while).

Once the chopper is down, taking the base is pretty standard procedure: huddle around in close proximity of the flag, and make sure to put down any incoming reinforcements. Once you have raised your own flag, advance to base B.

Onslaught_5F00_Isla_5F00_6_2D00_550.png

Try to avoid this situation in Onslaught Mode, if possible.

Base B
Going to base B requires a trip on the lake. Take the boat from beneath the cliffside straight to base B. There is one mounted machine gun on the beach, and the flag is situated in a narrow uphill street a bit further in. Before going straight for the flag, make sure you take out the sniper and the mounted machine gun on the rooftops.

Go for the flag, and take cover behind the crates placed there. This is a good position to restock on ammo and health. As long as the base is not taken, new enemies will appear along the road and head for you, but they should be easily taken down from afar -- especially if you have a recon in your team. Once the base is taken, prepare for the final push. If the flag refuses to raise, search the nearby buildings for any stray enemies.

Onslaught_5F00_Isla_5F00_9.png

Good luck, have fun!

Base C
Okay, this is a tough one. Remember -- if all of you die, it is game over. Base C can be approached via the mountains, which gives you a good sniping/machine gunning vantage point. When entering the base, though, a light enemy tank appears that needs to be taken out quickly. RPG:s are usually the most effective and safe way to attempt this, however, with all the other enemies swarming in you might find yourself in a pinch if you do not help each other with ammo and health and revive any fallen comrades instantly.

Try not to stay too close together when facing a tank. If you do, your entire squad could be compromised in one hit. When you have taken out the tank, the hardest part is over. Just mop up the opposition, watch that flag rise, and wait for the congratulatory message to appear. Then do it all over again and try to beat your best time. :)

Over and out.

Is it worth taking another informal poll of best nights for people? Well, here it goes:

(1) Monday

(2) Thursday

(3) Friday

(4) Sunday

Anyone who's interested in joining on Gully's GFC server for "the Weekly Anandtech BC2 Game Night", let us know what your top 2 choices are for nights. Let's assume 10pm Eastern, to make things easier for Central/Mountain/Pacific folks.
