Finally got to play last night for the first time in a couple weeks (been swamped at work).

Just unlocked the UMP-45 for engineer class - really liking it. I think engineer is definitely my favorite class on any map with vehicles. I'm a mine whore - love suicide rushing up a road, dodging bullets, and placing a few mines at a choke point that I just know someone is coming through. I think I took 4+ tanks/humvees out in a single round of Arica last night using nothing but mines.

I feel like it's almost worthless using rockets to attack a tank. Last night, used a tracer dart on a tank, and then me and another guy on my squad kept pelting it with rpgs and CGs - I went through six rpgs - tank still there. I'm guessing he had two engineers.

Perfectly happy sticking with my silent boom tools.

anybody run the recon w/ the thompson? in theory it should be like the ump, but i am thinking real world ballistics and not computer game ballistics.
I did a while ago. The thompson is a nice gun at medium range. Fairly accurate, decent range and power. The sight on it is crap, but meh. Once I got used to it it was about the same as running assault, except that I had either mortars or C4 to play with instead of extra ammo.

There's your problem. The CG is completely useless against tanks since the last patch, so your squaddie was doing absolutely no good. It would have been better if he had tried to get the engies instead of going for the tank.

The UMP is awesome. By far my favorite engie gun. I go with extra rockets and explosive perk playing engie, so I don't get red dot or magnum, and it still drops people pretty quick compared to the other subs.

I dont like the UMP, I feel like I cant kill anything with it

kinda like how I feel about the SCARL right now, but im 3 kils from the silver then it goes back on the shelf

IMO the AK745 is the only good gun for Engineer right now, with the XM8C and UMP on the second tier

the rest I loathe mostly

the uzi/pp2000 are OK on some maps

mr gustav and I spent 30 minutes wiping up on africa harbor conquest this am, he got me a nice lil ace badge, even though I was mainly trying to use the SCARL

A few thoughts on engineer weapons...I definitely am using the RPG more now (and even tried the silly AT4), after ending up with some terrible K/D ratios when trying to take out tanks with a dart and the CG. I just never killed them so would rarely get anything for my troubles (since engies fixed them right up after I died). And like Jeebus, I love those mines on maps where you can hide them well enough at choke points to get a few "mega" kills.

As for guns, I used to go only with the AK-74, but since I run just like Jesusthewererabbit (extra rockets/explosive perk), I was handicapped with the sights on the AK-74. For some reason, I'm finding the UMP better for use without the RDS. Successfully went one-on-one with a bunch of medics with M60s last night just because the UMP is so fast to fire.

The RPG is great. One round defending on Isla Innocentes, I took out 7 or 8 helis and 3 or 4 Bradleys with it. I've barely touched the Gustav since I got my platinum star with it. It just isn't really that much fun.

I went through an experimental phase with the Engineer, tried just about all the SMG's, including a long time period using the "all class" G3. Initially spent lots of time with the XM8C, of course.

I've felt very comfortable with the UMP ever since I confirmed I can kill two guys with one clip, at medium range. It being near silent (unlike the G3) helps keep the victim from knowing where they are being shot from until it's too late. Single shot accuracy also seems on-par with the M60, which as you know, is phenominal...

It's now my third place weapon for total kills, after the M60 & CG!

I'll give it another shot and see, with all these glowingly positive reviews of it

I like the G3 alot just wish it could use optics, it would be GREAT Then

just like the M14, decent gun, needs the 4x though

The UMP is a really odd gun. It's sweet spot is between about 15m and 30m. Anything closer than 15m the damage seems to go down ridiculously and the same for anything farther than 30m out. The nice thing is that it is very accurate, even past 30m out. If you're the kind of person that likes to pop out from behind a building and drop 5 rounds into someone, then go hide again, the UMP is great. If you're the kind that finds yourself in close combat a lot, the UMP sucks. It should not take half a clip on sights to kill someone from 5m away.

I dunno, IME the Thompson feels really underpowered, and if the stats sheets I'm finding are correct, its actually weaker than all the engie guns in close quarters situations, which is really the only distance the Thompson can be reliably wielded. Doesn't the UMP use the same ammo as the Thompson IRL, .45 ACP? It should at least have the same stats as the UMP... If that makes it OP, reduce the magazine size to 20 rounds.

The SCAR and UMP have nearly identical stats, so it isn't surprising that you feel the same about both. My only advice is to really use bursts. They're the two most powerful Engie guns (along with the base 9A-91) bullet for bullet and they also have the highest recoil.

If you're aiming down the sights at close range that might be your problem. The engie guns are all excellent when firing from the "hip". Most of them actually seem to function better that way.

That's one of my biggest wishes for this game - red dot and 4x sights for the all-kit guns (outside of shotguns which would be pointless as the slug perk is in the same upgrade slot). Although I could see why they were left out if it was intentional as the M14 (and the Garand, as it is nearly identical) could effectively become a pretty potent sniping weapon reducing the importance of the Recon class, and the G3 would give Assault power to the Engies that aren't necessarily supposed to have such a versatile and powerful main weapon.

I want to like the G3 but I can't get used to its iron sights. At first glance the sights seem wonderful - they're very simple and straight forward and, most importantly, they don't block much of your sight so you can keep a better eye on your target and the surroundings. But for whatever reason I can't seem to find the same level of success when using the iron sights as I do with other weapons, particularly other assault rifles in the game, and especially when I'm using the red dot sight.

When do you get the G3 ? I still only have gotten to the USAS-12 on the "common" guns.

Also do you folks prefer MAg Ammo or Marksman accuracy addon ?

IRL ump is 9mm, 40s&w and 45ACP, thompson = 45acp, that is why i kind of thought they would be pretty =, but guess not. i could see the thompson being a little slower handling because IRL it weighs ~2x as much as ump, but then it wouldn't jump around as much as the ump.

but again, video game vs RL 🙁

The Magnum Ammo perk is definitely the most popular one, however Marksman Accuracy can certainly be useful on maps where there might be more exchanges at range where that accuracy will outweigh the extra damage per bullet because you're getting more bullets on target.

The reason Marksman Accuracy isn't as popular, IIRC it only comes into play when you're aiming down the scope, and it only works on your main weapon...whereas the Magnum perk will work at all times on your main gun AND your pistol.

Another point to consider is that Magnum Ammo can be pretty redundant when long distance sniping as Recon with the bolt action rifles. Since headshots do double damage, it doesn't matter how far away the target is a target will go down with one head shot, and the bolt action sniper rifles will still take two shots to bring down a target with torso shots, magnum ammo or not. The Armor or Spotting scope is generally what I'll choose.

Speaking of which, Armor has kept me alive against Magnum wielding opponents for me to win those skirmishes, so perhaps the argument should be Mag vs. Armor, not marksman.

IRL ump is 9mm, 40s&w and 45ACP, thompson = 45acp, that is why i kind of thought they would be pretty =, but guess not. i could see the thompson being a little slower handling because IRL it weighs ~2x as much as ump, but then it wouldn't jump around as much as the ump.

true, the UMP can shoot those different calibers, but the in-game description of the UMP is 45acp, and the 25 round mag suggests that to be true as well. Even if the UMP in game was supposed to be shooting virtual 9mm or 40s&w, that makes it even worse that its that much powerful than the Thompson.

either way the Thompson is too weak and too inaccurate to bother with in game IMO, I'll take a shotgun or the M14 if I need more range.

so i'm using the engie class a lot right now, is it better to use the ump + magnum ammo
as opposed to cg + xplosive perk ?

does the magnum ammo perk transfer over to vehicles? last night i was gaming and was running the tanks - got into some tank vs tank battles, mine 100%, plus i had the hardened warheads and was losing. we were head to head - hitting each other front to front. the other tank would destroy me @ 2 shots. i don't remember getting killed this quick in the tanks. i thought it would take more than 2 shots to kill a tank head on?

i always got in the first shot, sometimes the first 2, but still lost. should i assume maybe the tank driver had hardened shells and maybe the gunner had better tank armor or is there something else at play here?

fwiw, it didn't matter if i was in the US tank or the RUS tank...don't know if it was always the same other tanker though. also, i wasn't getting hit by anything else, no mortars, not rpgs, no cgs/mines/c4, just tank on tank

Depends on what you want to do.

I really only go magnum on the engie when I'm trying to rack up kills to try and earn medals for the SMGs.

Otherwise I'll go with the armor perk or explosive perk. The armor perk is for when I'm more concerned about staying alive while making vital repairs.

only vehicle perks affect vehicles

If he wasn't dying in the same number of shots, chances are he had armor and/or engies repairing him during the fight.

If you were dying faster than he could take you out alone, chances are you were being hit by something else as well and/or being hit on the side even though you might have thought only your front was exposed - tanks take a LOT more damage from hits to the side and rear.

When I tank with friends, whoever is on the machine gun will generally jump out and get an extra rocket on the enemy tank and then go to repair. A true tank crew will rape a one-man tank any day.

maybe he had a gunner getting off a rocket too as the hit indicator was only coming from directly in front of me. i need to get some more friends to game online w/ this game and use ts as no voip in the game is fucking retarded, i still can't believe this is not fixed. that needs to be fixed asap.

Hey bunny - I just wanted to say thanks. I "tried" this this past weekend to see if it held water, and I was pleasantly surprised. I'm sure you can imagine how hard it is to retrain yourself to not drop into your sights when playing, but it made a hell of a difference. Usually 4 or 5 rounds would take down the enemy as opposed to needing to burst off most of a clip. It worked so well that I went back and bronze stared 3 of the engie guns, as well as AT Mines.

I'm not sure what it is - possibly the inherent inaccuracy of shooting out of sights that you end up hitting the other guy in the head more often. That's my gut feeling at least, because I can't tell you how many times I heard the bullet clang indicating a hit to the head when I was doing this. All I know is it was far more often than when using sights.

I've noticed this too with the engie guns and I think the main reason is that it's hard to see the other person close range when you're looking down the sight. I find that I can see and track the jumping/ducking that occurs whenever two people meet at close range when shooting from the hip.

if you arent playing hardcore

do it if you want bronzes

the guns are way more evenly matched, ie all are easier to kill with

And way easier to be killed with. Yes, I know. I have 3 favorite servers - the two AT servers and the Ars server. The Ars server is HC... but I'll play whichever is populated at the time. If none are populated, I choose random a server that has some people on it and go from there.
