Played 4 or 5 matches last night. I had a GREAT time and I really enjoy the game. This is definitely a PC shooter, not a console shooter (I tried the 360 demo and was really put off by it). Unfortunately, I ran into the typical DICE/Battlefield shit in the 5th or 6th match when it locked down my entire system so hard I had to turn off the power supply. Seems laggy at times, too.
But despite said lag, server browser difficulty (which console FPS's are supposed to "fix" with their matchmaking), and crash, it was still far more enjoyable than MW2 on my console, where it's also a PITA to get into games at times and everyone's just running around with their 20ft knives and heads cut off, and where the consequences of lag are even worse (due to its quicker pace).
I wrote off Dice after the first six months of BF2. The input lag drove me insane, as did the network lag and regular crashes. This game is good enough that I'll stick around for awhile and see what happens. The bottom line is that I'm enjoying it far more than any other shooter right now, so they get some leeway.
Here's why it scores points with me:
- At no time did I feel I was killed unjustly. No death felt "cheap" due to lag or game mechanics. Unlike MW2, if you see your opponent first you're pretty much guaranteed to take him down (provided you can aim), even with the lag I was experiencing. In MW2, there are just so many variables (many of which boil down to complete randomness) that even if you see your target before he sees you, it's a damn crap shoot. Maybe he'll knife you from two buildings over. Maybe you'll get cut down by one of the 14 helicopters in the sky. Maybe your bullets won't even register (happens a LOT with higher RPM weapons in MW2). I experienced none of this last night.
- The different classes have real purpose. Despite what people claim - that MW2 requires teamwork (ROFL) - it really just boils down to 1) which team averages the best connection, and 2) given (1), which team camps to their next killstreak OR which team has the most Marathon+Lightweight+Commando douchebags. In BFBC2, there's legitimate teamwork involved. I tried all of the classes, and for the first time, I actually really enjoyed being a sniper. Playing to my next unlock doesn't feel like work; it feels like a game.
